Just when you think it can't get any better, it does! The Ben Harper/Jack Johnson show at the Amphitheatre last night in Toronto was out-fucking-rageous!! Jack was fantastic, but Ben commands an audience like no other. The band, and Juan on the bass in particular, brought the house down and were laying down the funky grooves all night. The all-acoustic first encore with Ben singing by himself (and at the end with Jack) was incredible. I was moved, touched, and high! Here's the setlist....
set: Glory & Consequence, Excuse Me Mr., Brown Eyed Blues, Gold To Me, Forever, Sexual Healing, Bring The Funk, Steal My Kisses, Amen Omen, Temporary Remedy, Burn One Down, With My Own Two Hands/War
E: Waiting On An Angel, Walk Away, I Shall Not Walk Alone, High Tide Or Low Tide (w/ Jack Johnson)
E2: Faded/Whole Lotta Love
I must find a copy of this show! Pass on the word.
PS - Happy Canada Day!
So it was back up to Toronto last night for my second PJ show. Being Saturday night and all the time was right for some good tailgate action, so Steveo and myself rolled in about 4:30 to check the scene and have a few beers. We met some nice Amer'cans that fed us burgers from their BBQ in exchange for a J i was gonna roll for them that never materialized. Oh well! Into the venue we go all nice and buzzed and ready to dig the show. Missed the Buzzcocks again but not too upset about that. A sweeet Release opened the show and on it went from there. A couple of holdovers from the Thursday show but for the most part a new set and lotsa cover material to boot - Fortunate Son! Very cool, and a huge Baba O'Riley to close it out. The guy beside me kept passing me Js, as i think he was smoking like one every half hour, so that was also slick. Here's the setlist....
set: Release, Breakerfall, Hail Hail, Save You, Cropduster, Dissident, In My Tree, Given To Fly, Insignificance, Love Boat Captain, Get Right, I Believe In Miracles, I Got Shit, Lukin, Corduroy, Thumbing My Way, Daughter, Even Flow
enc 1: Bushleaguer, Fortunate Son, Do The Evolution, Better Man, Crazy Mary, Spin The Black Circle, Rockin' In The Free World
enc 2: Baba O'Riley
The only super-drag was the HOUR it took to get out of the parking lot afterwards. Even so, we were right by our fave piss-bush, so that was all good at least. Back there tomorrow for the capper with the Ben and Jack show!
Shit! I busted my Pearl Jam cherry last night down in Detroit at Pine Knob (or DTE Energy Music Theater for the new-school concert-goers) and it was crazy good! Ed was off his ass, McCready was soloing up a blue streak and the setlist was all-inclusive of some lesser-known jams through the "Man Trilogy" and into the older classics during the encores. The show closed out with Steve Earle guesting on Rocking in the Free World. Sweet! We also phoned Justin during Alive and if it made it to his message centre he'll hate us forever. :) Here's the setlist...
Last Exit / Brain Of J / Hail Hail / Save You / In My Tree / Red Mosquito / Present Tense / Green Disease / Immortality / Sleight Of Hand / Whipping / Corduroy / Down / Leatherman / Nothingman / Betterman / Spin The Black Circle / Encore Break 1 / You Are / Even Flow / State Of Love And Trust / Black
/ Alive / Encore Break 2 / Leaving Here / Know Your Rights / Rocking In The Free World (w/ Steve Earle)
Bring on the Saturday show in T.O.!!
Once again apologies for the Tuesday posting not containing a good old top 5; try grabbing some tunes from last week's list to tide you over! I think i will be excused due to the fact i was in Toronto last night with Steveo to catch Neil Young at the ACC. A little off track from what i expected, but nonetheless a great show - a pure Neil concept for sure. He's performing his new concept album, Greendale, in it's entirety. The only catch is that the album has yet to be recorded and released! So needless to say it was for the most part new to everyone, but what a crazy show! He had a full stage of theatre performers up there with him acting out the entire album, which takes place in small town Greendale. He had a porchfront, a jail cell, and many different town scenes coming up behind the band on a screen, which the actors performed in front of, about 6 feet above and just behind the drums. Crazy stuff. A nice bluesy/country tinge to most of the stuff. Am looking forward to checking the album for sure.
Then he dropped what most people were finally waiting for - a few classics! About a half-dozen tracks were played post-Greendale, including Hey Hey My My, Like a Hurricane, Roll Another Number For the Road, and my personal fave and the one track i was dying to hear, Powderfinger! All in all a solid show, and with Lucinda Williams opening up i have no complaints at all. On to Pearl Jam on Thurs! The mad week continues...

Caught Jomomma last night down at the Bacchus Lounge. Hadn't been out to see a local jam band in a while - a pretty decent show indeed. As Shurish put it, their jams are better than the songs themselves. The jams were solid yet fluid, with a nice easy rise - slightly hypnotic, which i can probably attribute to the guitar work as well as the beer. Good times.
