Top 5 Tuesday Eighty-One

Finally switching gears, we enter into the cinematic realm for a week or two. This week we examine the genius, sex and mayhem of the 80s lowbrow comedy. The 80s gave birth to the vulgar, tasteless, ridiculous yet hilarious teen comedy, usually based around the trifecta of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Anything was fair game during the excess of the 80s, and a whole slew of rude and crude teen comedies flooded the theatres. Any comedy from the 80s is fair game here, but let's not think too deeply on this one, because these films sure didn't! My tastes run a little off the beaten path, so i've left open a bunch of mega-classics for y'all to munch on. My initial list was at 14!

Top 5 Goofball 80s Comedies

  1. Top Secret! (1984) One of the earlier entries into the 80s sight gag/slapstick genre, this was a classic Zucker/Abrahams film that featured Val Kilmer in his first starring role as Nick Rivers. Cows in rubber boots, underwater barroom brawls, and a French Underground after which several of my friends are still named (Latrine & Chocolate Mousse). This was my 'Lebowski' of the 80s.
  2. Hot Dog... The Movie. (1984) The pioneer of the ski comedy genre, this movie had freestyle skiing back when daffys and spread eagles ruled the slopes, titties and beer, and the classic showdown finale: The Chinese Downhill!
  3. Sixteen Candles. (1984) From the stable of the master, John Hughes, comes the best geek in modern cinematic history (Farmer Ted), an early Cusack sibling sighting, and the only great thing that Molly Ringwald ever did. No more yankie my wankie, the Donger need food!
  4. Stripes. (1981) Another heavyweight in the raunchy comedy category, Ivan Reitman directed one of Bill Murray's finest 80s roles as loser John Winger. The cast is more stacked than the girls in the mud wrestling pit fighting Ox (John Candy), and there are more quotable lines from Bill that were more than likely improved on the spot. Lee Harvey, you are a madman! I want to party with you, cowboy.
  5. Private Resort. (1985) This was a classic 'spring break' style sex comedy that featured Johnny Depp in his first starring role, alongside Rob Morrow! The cast also had a young Diceman, some vintage Hector Elizondo, and some dude playing the classic surfer/stoner guy named Mike. Whoaaa, a mom and a dad! I'm hoooome!

Unreal...me shaking head. I will try and spell it out for you as best as I can Justine.

You are giving kudos to Killer for him dissing me about being off topic? Hence...you don't throw stones if you live in a glass house.

When I refer to Canuckski I refer to Killer since he is in Russia....not you. Hence the ski after Canuck. The fact that it is a new line means new train of thought/statement. The fact you are American means nothing unless you voted for Bush! But I still luv u Batman;)

Too funny about the Kazoo comment Scotty....I posted to Sherk on his my space that they better use that damn kazoo of theirs or I was going to start throwing stuff at them.

Everyone rocking on at the Wick Saturday?

Posted by: Jay on April 21, 2006 03:09 PM

zeppelin was dead by the 90s. try the Refreshments if you want to get something played! i hear there's a mean kazoo part.

Gay,
It's a personal top 5...not a name every comedy from the 80's! The only reason why Strange Brew for example didn't make my top 5 was because I drank it and the beer store wouldn't give me another!

1. Licence to Drive- The Coreys at their best, and a very young Heather Graham, gorgeous then and now.
2. Ski School- Stupid, funny, boobs.
3. Can't buy me love- I was obsessed with Amanda Peterson in high school. (Is it sad I remember her name?) Also Seth Green's first movie, I think.
4. Lover boy- Has to have sex with many, many women to raise money for college and get back with his girlfriend. FUCKIN' EH.
5. A night in the life of Jimmy Reardon- Didn't do well in the box office, and not very memorable, but I really liked River Phoenix in this. And Meredith Salenger was a hottie back in the day.
