Top 5 Tuesday Seventy-Three

I am by no means a record collector. I have a load of cds, but only what would be considered a handful of vinyl, and i can't even play it right now as my last turntable was Vag's over at the Palace! So this week's listing, for me, is about finding things you couldn't find anywhere else, thought were long since unavailable, or just plain cool discoveries. Hopefully, someone's entry will contain some piece of vinyl worth thousands, but sadly not my picks. Somebody please do me proud this week!

Top 5 Used Record Shop Finds

  1. Blu Bones - Sink on CD. I, among others, worshipped this band as the torchbearers of new metal in the early to mid 90's, and have seen them perform live countless times. This CD was eagerly anticipated, and while not as heavy as their live shows (how many records really are?) it was a welcome addition to my collection. It was then lost, and the band folded, and we were left with burned copies circulated off of Vagina's very well worn CD. I ended up finding a mint condition copy at Dr. Disc a year or so ago, and when told that Boris from the band didn't even have a copy left, was even more excited at the find. Now they can rock on, forever!
  2. The Four Horsemen - S/T on CD. Had an old cassette copy, taped from another cassette, and again Dr. Disc came through with a mint CD for me. The band only put out this one record, then i think they all died, but man does this one record rock fucking hard! Glad to have found it.
  3. G N'R - Studio bootlegs on Cassette. This had some great stuff that was leaked out in demo form, long before the internet made this stuff commonplace, and i enjoyed an early version of November Rain while Appetite was still ruling the world.
  4. Chuck Mangione Quartet - Alive! on Vinyl. I know you are all scratching your heads here, but i had read that Steve Gadd had some absolutely killer drum breaks on this record, and of course had to track it down. It took me 5 minutes and cost me 3 bucks!
  5. Funkadelic - Standing on the Verge of Getting It On on CD. A lot of the Funkadelic stuff is imported from the UK, and the older stuff is harder track down, but this stellar album allows me to listen to Red Hot Mama any time i like. Now i have to find the single release that continues the 8 minute guitar solo on the B side! Can anyone help me out here?

Update: The B-side to Red Hot Mama is called Vital Juices, and reprises the outro solo for another couple of minutes. I have downloaded the track and it is sweet; now just to get a hold of an original single!

I had to think a while about this one. Here we go:
5. Crooklyn OST Vol.2--Vol. 1 kicks ass and, as I discovered with this sweet record find, so does Vol. 2.
4. Radiohead Acoustic Live--found it down at the Village Idiot--if anyone hasen't been, check this place out.
3. Marvin Gaye Live--a delicious find down at City Lights...ah City Lights.
2. Sha Na Na--found this at Dr. Disc, I picked it up for nostalgia's sake. My parents used to put it on when I was a toddler--it was the only thing I could focus on. It became my babysitter.
1. Love Jones--I scoured the fucking earth for this album. I went fruitless for years after trying to order it and being shut down due to the record being discontinued. I found it for six dollars--ROCK!!!

Did the Sgt. Peppers album have the cut outs and pic extras in it?

April Wine kicks ass and is overlooked i think too much from avid cover bands(cough cough the fairmonts\gentlemen)
and thanks Matty 4 leaving those Rush albums 4 me-altho they had the drummer-whats his name again..Neil Peart-LOL!on the cover so I left 4 someone else...

Batman - never feel bad about the "Nature of the Beast"! Man, for a band that thrived on covers and ballads that have recently been covered by Anne Murray, "Nature..." KILLED!! It's like Styx's "Paradise Theatre" - another insane album from a band who would later become Cartman Fodder :D

Again with the ghetto version of the "Record Store finds" - One day when I was headin' to tha subway, I found two crates of vinyl on the sidewalk for giveaway. I rummaged thru these mint condition jems and found, among others:

Original Musiquarium
Syncronicity
Rumours
Thriller
Toys in the Attic
The Unforgettable Fire
Sgnt Peppers
...And the list goes on...

All vinyl, all playable.
Now if I can just hijack that playa from tha palace :P
Big Love
Oh, and there were a bunch of albums there by Geddy Lee and the Rush, I only pickt up a couple tho - had to leave something for other collectors.

Steve-o,

Of course I know who Neil Peart is....just making reference to a previous post where a certain person said they ran into Geddy Lee and his drummer......when the majority of us would have said i ran into Neil Peart and that ugly looking bassist guy.....lol.

Coo wook coo coo...coo wook coo coo.

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 21, 2006 10:47 PM

Gay,
i have a 45 of Prince's Purple Rain on purple vinyl! hot! my dad picked it up when Walmart was Wolco

and you mean Neil Peart, right? Hoser!

1. 24 Gone - The Spin.....I found this is a used shop in Ottawa. The Band only had released one out that discontinued after its release in 1990 and was very hard to find. Because of this if any of you were fans of 89X in those days you would remember that they would play the entire album on New Years Day so everyone could record it. They re-released the album in 2003 with some minor changes. I should have had this album on my top 5 deputs.

2. Bob and Doug Mckenzie - G'Day you Hosers
Not the best find from a musical soundpoint....but I had to grab it. Geddy Lee does a guest appearance on Take Off...not sure if that drummer guy does though...ha ha.

3. The Cult-interview picturedisc
This was kinda cool and was a BBC radio interview with the band that had a picture of Billy Duffy on one side and Ian Atsbury on the other. I got this when I was in Grade 10 many moons ago.

4. The Northern Pikes-Big Blue Sky on Blue vinyl
Obvioulsy the coolest part of this album was the blue vinyl. I always like the song Teenland though.

5. Yes-Fragile
I remember by Dad blaring this album when I was a kid. I always liked Roundabout and the rest of the album is pretty good too.

Thats some funny shit Killer

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 21, 2006 03:43 PM

oh killer,
one day you'll find your self arrested in some motel with a 16 year old! watch your back my brother!

1. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde - original album cover in not the usual plastic case, but rather folding out hard paper case with tons of pics. very cool. the thing is they also had the Free Wheeling Bob Dylan in the same style, but i opted for just the Blonde.......my mistake!

2. G Love - Coast to Coast Motel - first heard when it came out in 95, havn't seen it since. had to grab it.

3. Mavin Gaye - Gold - 23 super sexy hits all on one CD. "i'm just a stuborn kinda fella, got my mind made up about you!"

4. Chris Robinson - didnt even know he did a solo disc. hot southern hippy jams mostly about Kate Hudson + a bonus documentry of some sort that i have yet to watch.

5. Kickstand Travolta - didn't buy it, but the Captain and I had a chuckle over the band pic just for fun. You Rock Scotty!

1. TATU: The pre-pie licking Years. Full of rarities and extended versions of muff diving lyrics.

2. Boris Yeltsan and the Wailers: Man he can play a mean accordian.

3. Leninsync: Way ahead of his time....maybe the bith of Russian Pop.

4. Smirnoff: Named for the vodka...the metal band kicks some ass! I was able to catch a live performance in the underpass from the metro to the Boar House. \m/

5. Anna and the Heartbreakers: The teen tennis sensation didn't always play tennis...she sang Alanisque type of Russian teenie pop.

\m/
