Top 5 Tuesday Seventy-Two

This week's topic is courtesy of the Captain, and to be honest i thought i'd covered this topic already, but upon inspection of the back catalogue it appears that i haven't, so let's get into it. The topic at hand is top 5 debut albums, and my personal criteria, and what i think should be a rough guideline for the selection process is this: don't just select the first album from your favourite band if it doesn't compare to the monumental classics from their discography. For example, the Captain and i discussed the fact that the first albums from the world's biggest bands, the Beatles and the Stones, don't hold a candle to say, the White Album or Exile on Main St. Choose wisely, peruse your full catalogue of music and post up some great records for everyone to dig.

Top 5 Debut Albums

  1. The Doors - The Doors. This record stands alongside or above any Doors album, and cast a dark cloud over the Summer of Love by introducing dark psychedelia, unique instrumentation, poetry, mythology and theatre into the arena of 60's rock.
  2. Music From Big Pink - The Band. Emerging from Dylan's shadow, The Band wrote an album of pure roots rock that strayed so drastically from the psychedelic music of the times that it influenced everyone from Clapton to Hendrix to reevaluate their approach to their own music.
  3. Appetite For Destruction - G N'R. This record tore the spandex off of the cock rock scene and laid the foundation for pure, honest, balls-out raunchy gutter rock well into the 90's.
  4. Grace - Jeff Buckley. Buckley's one and only true album release was the cornerstone of singer/songwriter inspiration for years to come. This album directly contributed to the demise of my mid-90's jam/funk band, Kickstand Travolta, as our lead singer was so inspired by this album that it influenced his written material from that point onward, leading to new material that led him down another road. Godspeed to him, as it is a monumental piece of work.
  5. Blind Melon - Blind Melon. While not an album that ushered in a new musical direction or that broke terribly new ground, this debut record harkened back to a loose jammy vibe during the heyday of grunge. A feelgood record that still receives regular play in my home.

Gay, i took the courtesy to highlight Scotty's rules: "don't just select the first album from your favourite band if it doesn't compare to the monumental classics from THEIR discography." and if talking about your strengh impoves your self esteem, well so be it. ps. spit don't knock down the Rosa!

Posted by: Steve-O on February 18, 2006 01:29 PM

Hey Matty....don't you have some grass to smoke?!

Posted by: Killerov on February 18, 2006 10:27 AM

LOVE THIS SHIT!!!
"Ten" is Pearl Jam's only album! Well, that and the 2 tunes that kickt off Vs. (left over from the "Ten" sessions no doubt). After that it just went silly :P
LOL!!
Pearl Jam is grunge like Motley is metal.
Big Love.

Posted by: Matty on February 18, 2006 09:55 AM

Hey Fuck Face aks GAY.....GISH blows ten out of the water as a quote "grunge" album...Pearl Jam is not grunge (only musical idiots actually thing thet're grunge), they just came from Seattle and wore army shorts and docs.

\m/

Posted by: Killerov on February 18, 2006 08:03 AM

Hey Stevo,

Ya its not Pearl Jams best...but its againts others debuts u jackass.....name me a better Seattle/Grudge debut from that time that was better.

Steve-o...take the Sumo suit b/c I would spit on you and u would fall over.

Vag and Scotty...good show tonight....since no one else bothered to show up

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 18, 2006 05:58 AM

HOLY!Apparently winter chills are spreading like wildfire and bringing out the cold hearts.
Well married or not at least Im gettin laid which is possibly why Im not so fuckin grumpy and critical.
And just 4 the record I prolly wouldnt post my accomplishment of finding my better half on cowbell b\c steveO he prolly wouldnt be good enough for you...as I remember you stating 2 me once upon a time...XOXO kiss and make out-I MEAN-up everyone :)
p\s if theres sumo suits i vote all us broads in bikinis w\mud 2 distract the dudes...?

Posted by: batman on February 18, 2006 03:59 AM

Take it easy, Rosa.

Posted by: The Captain on February 17, 2006 11:44 PM

combative rosa in the hizzouse!

Posted by: scotty on February 17, 2006 08:46 PM

holy shit it is on with everyone! fuck you all, fuckers!

Ten is, like you said Gay, not pearl jams greatest album......look over the rules one more time.

Justine, you would'be be married, cause you'd probably post the highlights on Scotty's site, detail for detail.......lol. in broken sentences no less. and once again, there was no apology, what Scotty posted was justification!

Scotty, fuck the sumo suits, Gay just wants to touch us

Bring it fuckers! ;)

Posted by: Steve-O on February 17, 2006 08:00 PM

I'll bring the ice.

Posted by: The Captain on February 17, 2006 04:34 PM

Anyone going to the Poacher's tonight/Sat to see Vag and Kris.....aka Bitter? At least Bitter is better than C2K.

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 17, 2006 03:39 PM

Hey Killer,

I never said that Ten was PJ's best album and I agree with you there. But to me PJ's Ten was the more influencial Grundge/Seattle debut at the time snd deserved recognition. The fact that their subsequent releases were even better speaks to their ability as a band for their talent, versitility, and staying power. Anyway dude....truce.

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 17, 2006 01:22 PM

sumo suits. done deal.

Posted by: scotty on February 17, 2006 10:19 AM

FYI GAY...anybody that knows me knows that TEN is not my favourite PJ album.

Posted by: Killerov on February 17, 2006 05:23 AM

Scotty quick get out the Cowbell rule book and define debut album for us...JUDGES???... LOL... while their first release only has 8 tracks on it I would hardly call it an extended single release. Stop grasping at straws Killer, anyone and their dog would consider UP to Here to be their 2nd Album and their self-titled to be their first.

I even had Pearl Jam on my list you ungrateful SOB....LOL.

Scotty maybe we can get those big blow up Sumo suits and we can all battle out our differences that way.

Peace and Love everyone

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 17, 2006 05:12 AM

Hey GAY....since when did EP's become LP's you stupid son of a bitch?

Posted by: Killerov on February 17, 2006 01:40 AM

Holy Shit Nat....don't drag me into your Vagina Monologues.....and if we were to do interpretive dance it would be to Depeche Mode or maybe some George Micheal

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 16, 2006 10:34 PM

Vagina, I'm entitled to my opinion. I'll continue to enjoy the Pablo Honey while you and Gay do interpretive dances to Sting - Desert Rose. Go fuck yourself.

Posted by: chilli on February 16, 2006 09:35 PM

i can feel the love on the cowbell tonight.

Posted by: scotty on February 16, 2006 09:15 PM

Hey Killer....no offence but since u are getting back to ur hip rootskis you might want to listen to their first album which is actually self entitled....American Exit....Highway Girl

While I am no expert it appears that some should go to discography school.

Holy Fuck I am starting to sound like Vagina

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 16, 2006 08:45 PM

There you have it...Vagina prefers Semisonic to Tom Waits--you sick son of a bitch. And, ahem, you are right--Chili, The Bends and OK Computer kick Pablo in the ass.

Posted by: The Captain on February 16, 2006 08:16 PM

well just when i thought i could sit back relax and laugh my ass off at everyone else trashing and taking the sides of either vagina or captain...steveO pulls batman in AGAIN-f'er!!
well...captain breifly introduced me 2 some tom waits and i remember liking...steveO i have moved maybe IAM married...in scAtty stating that hes not trying 2 be a dick and me knowing hes not a dick i take that as apology enough.
i still think money maker is better...
XOXO

Posted by: batman on February 16, 2006 07:42 PM

And the fact that none of you have blasted Chili for mentioning Pablo Honey, which is inferior to no less than 3 other Radiohead albums, proves, well, you figure it out......

Posted by: metal vagina on February 16, 2006 07:11 PM

I recognize that all of you trendy kids think Dirt is better, but you're all wrong.....anyways, a guy who lists 5 hip hop bands on his top 5 "riffs" list doesn't really have a lot of cred in my book anyway.

Steve-o Southern Harmony has a 3-4 good tracks and a bunch of filler, just like every other Crowes record EXCEPT Moneymaker.

Ass captain I'd rather hear Closing Time by fucking Semisonic than the shite Tom Waits releases and calls "music"

Posted by: metal vagina on February 16, 2006 06:57 PM

Ah go fuck yourselfs!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Killerov on February 16, 2006 05:07 PM

1. Appetite- aka "the Bible"
2. I Mother Earth- Dig
3. Sevendust
4. Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
5. RATM

and for the record, Southern Harmony blows Moneymaker away, Dirt is on a way higher plane than Facelift, and Let Love Rule and Mama Said are equals! that's allowed!

Justine: "Mrs" is used for married women, and i don't think Scotty apologized for anything! he's not taking over for me, he just beat me to the punch!

it's a celebration Bitches! Enjoy yourselves

Posted by: Steve-O on February 16, 2006 12:36 PM

awww shit...sorry vag u were replying to the captain's list....my bad....I agree with you that mama said is better...although stop dragging around is one of my fav tunes

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 16, 2006 09:43 AM

Jimi Hendrix-Are You Experienced
Rage Against The Machine-RATM
Portishead-Dummy.....good call Ass Captain
Pearl Jam - Ten
The Doors-The Doors

and Vagina I hope you were joking about Mama Said b/c that wasn't Lenny's debut album...it was Let Love Rule

Posted by: Jay aka Gay on February 16, 2006 09:41 AM

Tom Waits is a GOD!
A constantly inebriated, completely from another planet, lost his marbles in '72 kinda God but still...
Oh, and "Dirt", front to back - no skipsies, no turning back any day. "Facelift" - uhhh... "We Die Young". "Lions" is GOOOODDDD....
Big Love :P
Oh, and just so a certain someone doesn't accuse me of suckin' Captain Dick - "Mama Said" --> C'MON!! LMAO!!

Posted by: Matty on February 16, 2006 09:30 AM

Vag, have you ever even HEARD Closing Time?

Posted by: The Captain on February 16, 2006 02:57 AM

A man with Tom Waits on his list, number one even, telling me I have a lot to learn about music.....talk to me when he learns how to sing.

Facelift IS the better album, by a longshot, half the songs on downward spiral are unlistenable, and Shake your moneymaker is the ONLY Crowes album with more that 3-4 good tracks.

Just scanned my Lenny cd's, and I'll take Mama Said any day of the week.

Posted by: metal vagina on February 16, 2006 01:11 AM

apology accepted scAtty!!:)i gotcha.xoxo
captain lovin the recognition of ur approval...but not gonna lie i MAY have 2 agree w\vag on his choice of 'shake ur money maker'-big fan since i was little..Mmm chris robinson..oops sorry-but yah!XOXO
p\s u guyz plan any thin lizzie??

Posted by: batman on February 16, 2006 12:53 AM

1. Tom Waits--Closing Time
2. Lenny Kravitz--Let Love Rule
3. Gomez--Bring It On
4. Portishead--Dummy
5. Nick Drake--Five Leaves Left

Nice ones on the Petty, Boss, Rage, Zeppelin, G'n'R, The Band, Buckley, Blind Melon, and Killer, nice one on the N.W.A. Vagina, you have got a lot to learn about music. Dirt was better than Facelift, The Downward Spiral was better than Pretty Hate Machine, and Shake Your Money Maker was the worst album the Crowes came out with.

Posted by: The Captain on February 15, 2006 08:40 PM

fair enough, but the aerosmith?? :) i'm not trying to be a dick, just to maintain relevance and accuracy within the topic at hand. this shit will be archived for generations of music enthusiasts to come! xxoo

Posted by: scotty on February 15, 2006 07:31 PM

thats it no more mrs.nice girl...I do consider adding Young a new beginning...holy!looks like scAtty is taking steveO's place...fuck i move and i still get harASSed!"to each their own"...
Cheers out 2 Amy for having good taste in music and the class 2 know that when stevie nicks&lindsay buckingham being added to the band WAS the beginning i was lookin for!!what was fleetwood w\out them..really.

1. G n' Fuckin' R Baby! - no need to list title or even explain!
2. Tragically Hip: Up to Here - countless mosh nights at GT's and many multi day festivals...I am glad that I left Canada to rekindle my love of this fucking awesome band!
3. Metallica: Kill em All - I hope it was their first, because it was definately my first Metallica experience.
4. Suicidal Tendencies: ST - beware I'm possed to skate!
5. NWA: Straight outta Compton - non stop ol'school goodness and still one of my favs.

\m/

Posted by: Killerov on February 15, 2006 10:54 AM

Scott, you pretty much covered it with the Buckley, GN'R, The Doors & Blind Melon! To avoid repetition, here are 5 additional delicious albums to add to the list -

1. Stone Temple Pilots - Core
2. Counting Crows - August & Everything After
3. Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
4. Snoop - Doggystyle (I know Matty mentioned this already... but Snoop's my boy!)
5. Ani Difranco - Ani Difranco

honorable mentions: Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes, Radiohead - Pablo Honey & Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

Posted by: Chilli on February 15, 2006 10:42 AM

Bruce Springsteen - Greetings from Asbury Park
U2 - War
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin I

in poor Batman's defense, the addition of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham did completely change that bad. You could make a case that was the first album of the new band, but...

Posted by: amy on February 15, 2006 09:56 AM

"...if it doesn't compare to the monumental classics from their discography."

"What's the story?" Too much "Dirt" up in here! "Rumours" has it that "Aerosmith" was in fact their first album :)

Just noshin'. LOL!!

Van Halen I?
Rage Against The Machine?
Ten? - someone had to say it.
Doggystyle?
I da KNO. What was "Slik Toxic's" first album called again - LOL!! Difficult Topic. Most of my fave artists are ones who continue to write so really, the latest should be tha greatest?
Big Love.

justine, your #1 & #2 picks are the 12th and 2nd albums from those bands, respectively. (i don't consider adding Young to the band to put them back at square 1.) a roman numeral 1 is a capital I.

vag, oasis would be on my extended list for sure, and perhaps you would also have an extended list if your musical world extended back pre-80s.

Posted by: scotty on February 15, 2006 08:27 AM

1~Aerosmith-Permanent Vacation
2~Crosby Stills Nash & Young-Deja Vu
3~Fleetwood Mac-Fleetwood Mac
4~Elton John-Elton John
5~Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin 1(cant do roman numerals!)
Nice captain...vagina ur list is pussy BUT your ending let me forgive you...happy valentines day boyz xoxo

Posted by: batman on February 15, 2006 02:07 AM

1. Alice in Chains- Facelift
2. Oasis- Definitely Maybe
3. Weezer- Blue Album
4. Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine
5. Black Crowes- Shake Your Moneymaker
