Top 5 Tuesday Seventy

Let's have a little fun this week with a more subjective listing. Everyone will have their own opinions about what they find to be the core components of a modern movie soundtrack. Some may be legit, some may be jokes, but all will be deemed relevant here, unless of course, i deem it to be irrelevant. Think in "High Fidelity Mode" and all will be revealed to you.

Top 5 Soundtrack Rules

  1. Break out a solid up & coming artist. There are loads of undiscovered bands out there, and few of them get to next level shit without one big break. A soundtrack is a perfect opportunity for said break. For example, 'The Shins will change your life' from Garden State, along with 2 songs on the soundtrack busted them wide open.
  2. Use an obscure or album track from a great artist. How many of you own all albums by Dylan, Neil Young and the Stones? Exactly. By mining some lesser known albums by the greats, a solid album track can be unearthed and delivered back to the public ear after years of being overshadowed by the band's hits. For example, Dylan's 'The Man In Me' from The Big Lebowski, Dylan's 'Most of the Time' from High Fidelity, and the Stones' 'Fool to Cry' from Beautiful Girls all prove this point.
  3. Rescue/revive a one hit wonder. Think 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' from Shrek and 'Afternoon Delight' from every comedy released in the last 2 years.
  4. Don't cover a classic song just to get it on the soundtrack. While The Band's version of 'The Weight' was included within the movie Easy Rider, it was not permitted for use on the actual soundtrack, so a less-than-stellar version by Smith was used. The biggest error in cover judgement had to be GnR's horrendous version of 'Sympathy for the Devil' to close out Interview With the Vampire. Conversely, an excellent cover, such as Townes Van Zandt's 'Dead Flowers' (again from Lebowski) can add new life to a song, movie, career and soundtrack.
  5. Always include at least one song from one of the following artists: Bob Dylan, The Stones, Zeppelin, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake, The Who or Neil Diamond.

holy!drama drama drama..
i also think that a great soundtrack regardless of the actual music for a mement is to have hot actors\actresses involved..ie:jason lee\kate hudson\joaquin pheonix\reece witherspoon\billy crudup.

I've got a good idea ..... Remake an old cartoon as a movie and get Jack Johnson to do the soundtrack.... I think it would work

Posted by: the-bri-man on February 1, 2006 04:18 PM

Captain,
First of all, we all know why you don't sing PJ songs...you're voice is too girly and not deep enough. As for the idiots that request Eddie's 'Hide your Love Away'....well they're just musical idiots for not knowing a cover song when they hear one.
NEW REQUEST: Learn 'Man of the Hour'...if u pull this one off I'd be impressed.
Thirdly, why is PJ nearly always involved with amazimg sound tracks...because they are a fucking talented and diverse band like it or not!

FYI Justine, Mike McCready rocks the lead guitar for Still Water!

P\S HAPPY BELATED 60TH BDAY GOES OUT 2 JOHN PAUL JONES(LZ)(01\31\06)xoxo
...and justin i have a request for next thurs i make an appearance instead of stairway as ur closing nite cap how about-eddie vedders 'hide ur love away'xxx

Also, if the song has strong relation to the theme of the movie in an overall sense. A shining example is 'We're going to be Friends' at the beginning of Napolean Dynamite. And it's pretty cool if you can get one of the actors to sing the songs: Jack Black--Let's Get it On; the Walk the Line soundtrack, and the Chelsea Walls soundtrack--again with a kickass rendition of 'Jealous Guy' by Jimmy Scott. One more thing: when movies completely juxtapose what is happening in the scene to what is being played. For example, in Snatch where Vinny Jones has Spud's head in the window of his car driving down the street listening to Shooting Star by Madonna--that's some funny shit. The best example is in a Bronx Tale with the severe beating of some biker's in a resturant juxtaposed with an operatic track.

Judgment Night had an awsome soundtrack - mixing the metal and rap together! unheard of for the time! great soundtrack!

Posted by: Steve-O on January 31, 2006 06:10 PM

Scotty my man you did it. I can't think of anything to add, accept - HEY JUSTIN - NEXT TIME I'M IN TOWN...CAN YOU PLAY "HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY"?

Later!

Posted by: Pauls on January 31, 2006 04:55 PM

The 'I Am Sam' OST had a cool idea--covering songs by the Beatles--what better band to set off an album of covers? However, it wasn't quite done well enough. About 35% of the album were kickass covers, but the rest failed to even reach the originals--they don't have to be better, just different. A good idea that fell short. And, I swear to God, if one more shithead asks me for 'Hide Your Love Away' by EDDIE FUCKING VEDDER, I am just going to snap.

Scotty's list nears perfection, so I'll only add a few very specific ideas:

1. Have the directors wife write a little instrumental piece that fits the movie perfectly **

2. Create a fake band and put them on the soundtrack **, +

3. If the rest of the soundtrack is classical music, no need to through in a bad Celine Dion song.

** May only work in Cameron Crowe films
+ Spinal Tap should be a category all on it's own.
