Top 5 Tuesday Sixty-Six

Welcome back (both bloggers and the PC) and happy new year! Now that the retail hell has subsided and work hours have returned to manageable levels, let's get back to rockin'. The topic allows some flexibility so as to not have everyone listing the same shit (and to avoid a complete year-end cliche), so if you also discovered a sweet album last year, it too is fair game.

Top 5 Albums of (or discovered in) 2005

  1. Stereophonics - Language, Sex, Violence, Other? A recent discovery on the rock front, the Stereophonics came to my attention during the Live8 concerts. Seeing them perform Dakota in front of 10s of thousands of people gave me one of my live chills of the year, and that was just over webcast! See my 'Concert Regrets' listing for another not-so-great Stereophonics reference.
  2. Stereophonics - You Gotta Go There to Come Back. A fine companion piece to the aforementioned album.
  3. White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan. This is on many a year-end list this year, and with very good reason - the Stripes add piano and marimba into the mix!
  4. John Mayer Trio - Try! John has strapped on a pair of brass balls and tapped into the spirit of Stevie Ray on this scorching/sweet live release. It also doesn't hurt to have 2 session giants as your rhythmic backbone. This one hasn't left the car yet.
  5. Gary Jules - Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets. Some of my friends didn't get quite as excited over this guy as i did, but you can't beat it for a modern day, Paul Simonesque ode to La-La Land.

Honourable Mentions - Neil Diamond - 12 Songs; Ryan Adams - Cold Roses; anything by Brian Jonestown Massacre (courtesy of the Dig! exposure).

if i wanted to hear an SRV album, i'd play "Say What?" if i wanted to hear some chump pretend to have as much soul as SRV, i'd throw John Mayer on, and if i wanted to listen to an album with a dozen influences to pick out, listen for, and appriciate , i'd throw Cold Roses on! mmmmm cold roses

brass balls my ass!

1. cold roses -including jacksonville city nights and 29, they all seem to go together
2. van lear rose
3. X and Y
4. Bob Dylan - i really can't explain my obsession with him, but it feels so good
5. Strokes - first impressions - maybe a week late, but i'm adding them anyway!!

1. The Bravery - debut album...if you in anyway like 80's music...you'll love the Bravery.
2. The Killers - Hot Fuss...the Killers would appeare to have modeled themselves after Duran Duran. Watch a Killers video and it's like watching a short film (a la Duran Duran).
3. The Arcade Fire - Funeral...awesome music and they are Canadian!
4. Air - Moon Safari...not released in 2005 but I just recently discovered it. The joys of having an iPod. :)
5. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have it So Much...their second release and even better than the first. Love those Scottish rockers! :)

Hope you all had a kick ass New Years...my number 1 song for 2006...Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond. The song was played just after midnight and made my New Year! 2006 is going to be an awesome year!
Cheers!!

1. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
2. Opeth - Ghost Reveries
3. System of a Down - Mesmerize
4. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
5. James LaBrie - Elements of Persuasion

I discovered so much new music in 2005 that to include it in my year-end wrap up would be an exercise in recollection so big that I'm just not willing to attempt it.

I'm scared that my top 5 will edge me closer to "wuss rock vagina" than "metal vagina", but here goes....(and somewhat noteworthy that 4 out of the 5 are Canadian releases)

1. Hot Hot Heat, Elevator: Catchy shit simple as that
2. City and Colour, Sometimes: The dude from Alexisonfire who can actually sing writes some killer mellow acoustic tracks
3. Tegan and Sara, So Jealous: I'm utterly embarrased that I love the new album from these feminazis so much
4. System of a Down, Mezmerize: The soundtrack to my workout for 6 months
5. Weakerthans, Left and Leaving: Gerg turned me on to these guys, not a 2005 release, but newly discovered for me, and this cd rules
