In keeping with last week's 'monster riffs' theme, as promised, i bring the top 5 MONSTER FUNK RIFFS to the table. This opens up the options a little more for the big bad bass guitar, which should hold down the majority of the riffage, but a funky little wah wah guitar part could also steal the show. These suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg; hopefully y'all will sink the ship. 'Scotty, what choo gonna list now? Mahvin, what'sa evah i list, it gots to be FUNKY. 1..2..3..'
- Shakey Ground - The Temptations. Massive. Funk. Riff. As badass as they come. I bet i can throw this riff over that mountain.
- For the Love of Money - BulletBoys. Just kidding. The O'Jays murder it on this killer groove about dolla bills y'all. Recently made uber-famous by The Donald.
- The Jam - Graham Central Station. Larry Graham steps out and introduces the band as a selection of solos get tied together by distorted bass and funky-clean geetar. Prince has covered this live, and also gives the drummer some in his version.
- Red Hot Mama - Funkadelic. A nice, simple, 2 note riff drives this one home to an anthemic chorus about a red hot mama lookin' good to them. Need i say more? Rumour has it that the Big Finger has a version in the works. I think it's called White Hot Mommy.
- Sing a Simple Song - Sly & the Family Stone. There are sooooo many Sly songs to list here, so i just went with one of my faves. And it just fuckin' groooooooves.
