Revelation: n. 1. a dramatic disclosure of something not previously known or realized. 2. communication of knowledge to man by a divine or supernatural agency.
Both of these definitions apply to an album or song that turns your world upside down and leaves you standing there dumbfounded, shouting "Holy Shit!" at the top of your lungs, wondering where such music came from and why you haven't heard it before now. These are the records we are looking for today. Now don't go listing a bunch of old safe ones, or your fave records of all time, unless they truly apply to the task at hand. Some of my fave bands were passed over for this list (The Band, The Doors) in favour of records that i can actually recall the exact moment i heard them first and why i freaked out. I love those other bands to death, but they would be more at home on an all time best list, not this list i present here today.
Top 5 "Revelation" Albums
Gonna go with my revolutionary albums here - not "all time faves" Will drop 'em chronologically so you gotta undastand...
1. Black Sabbath, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - This album scared the shit outta a little 5 year old Yorkie lad :S I still remember the intro to "Iron Man" with fear.
2. The Police, Regatta da Blanc - At 7 my aunt introduced me to the hit parade and "Message in a Bottle" became the song to cheer for/against and sing badly.
3. The Beatles, Double White - Dad bought this for Ma when I was 9. It makes all my lists and "Happiness..." makes the album.
4. ZZ Top, Afterburner - Hey, I was 13 and having Wet Dreams, what did I kno? Still, when I started listening to Tres Hombres, Fandango and Deguello... DAMN!
5. Bon Jovi, Slippery/7800 Degrees - I blame these guys for perverting me in high school. It would take me years to recover!
6. Run DMC, Raisin Hell - RIP JMJ! Rick Rubin at his best! I love the Beasties but they did NOT have JMJ. Luckily for us Run DMC did!
7. RATM, the only album - It all started to come back in University. I was happy that Nevermind wasn't going to represent that era for me - as it was the only revolutionary thing to happen in rawk until this album busted shit wide open!
8. The History of Funk Vols.1-5 - I will always owe Scotty for ever for properly introducing me to funk past. But, while he looks to Funkadelic - I owe my allegiances to Mr. Sly Stone. Bootsy/Larry - can't go wrong either way I say!
9. Outkast, Aquemini - I would give it to Snoop but I hear that Dr. Dre wrote all of tha Dogg's lyrics on DS and all the music was supplied by Bootie so... On to the real revolutionary - Outkast have next. Still.
10. Michael Franti & Spearhead, Stay Human - I've already said way too much about this album out here but you did ask for revolutionary. In my opinion, the most relevent album out here - the one kids will be talking about in 20 years.
Hey - I love all you kids but lay back on the Rap/Hip Hop :D Scatty knos! I LOVE rock and it will always be mine but it's over! It peaked in 69 and the best happened in the 70's when the precedent had been set. We may never have got "The Message" but us whiteys neva got struck by lightnin' until 20 years later so... Take off your conservo slippers and your comfy smoking jackets, trow on the dancin' shoes and enjoy music present. 50's shait but that Kanye... PE FOREVA! YO!! (Listenin' to FOABP right now)

Posted by: Scotty on September 30, 2005 02:59 AMHey Batman, leave the Vag alone....ya sure he's got an eklectic taste in music (of which there is some serious dents ie Oasis and the Depressed Mode) but he rocks when he has too! \m/ Besides, you'd be warped too having to listen to pop shit week in and week out while DJing...the scary thing is that you start to like it after a while. If he was able to do a metal/rock night, he's jin and jang would balance once again...or is that gin and juice?

Posted by: Batman on September 28, 2005 04:02 PMI wasnt going to comment on the topic at hand because only westmount mentioned zeppelin, but i want to show those few of you that i DO have other interests than the mighty zeppelin!
#1-Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes-Live at the Greek-awesome songs(of course)and guitar riffs but Chris Robinson just doesnt cut it dont get me wrong its a great cd,Justin blew me outta the room when he made me listen but then Vagina pulled through and gave it to me!!!
#2-Neil Young-Greatest Hits-No comment, its a sweet crusin cd for those nights Robyn n I toured to London from Sarnia to see you fackers.Every song leaves me just singin along..
#3-CCR-Chronicle Volume 2-I of course dig Volume 1 its a classic but once Justin n ScAtty introduced me to Wrote a song for everyone my CCR respect went thru the roof.
#4-Fleetwood Mac-Rumours-My aunt actually brought Fleetwood into my world back when I was about 10 and they havent left, altho my ex shared the same love and now I think of him when I hear Second Hand News!blah!
Lastly #5-U2-The best of-Thought I was a bigger fan of U2 until I bought this cd and realized I really only love about 3 songs the rest bore me.Sorry to all the huge U2 fans out there!

Posted by: Capt. on September 28, 2005 03:44 PMMaybe Scotty should have a top 5 revelation TV Shows
His list....
1. Sex in the city
2. Desperate Houseviwes
3. Extreme Makeover (home edition)
4. Dr. Phil
5. The view
Top 5 Revelation albums pour moi....
1. Bon Jovi, Slippery when wet- Without this masterpiece there would be no Metal Chris/ Vagina/ whatever the nom du jour is
2. Depeche Mode, Ultra- Even though they have better overall albums, this is the one that turned me on to one of the greatest bands of all time.
3. Dashboard Confessional,The places you have...
Amazing depressing mellow tunes to help ease me into my elder years.(and annoy Scotty as I sing them in the shower)
4. Underworld, Beaucoup Fish- Proof that electronic/dance music could be something other than gay/shitty/boring
5. Deftones, White Pony- Made me realize that there was still some really really awesome metal being made in the new millenium.
Since honourable mentions are "in" I'll just put everything from the big 3 Seattle bands in 1991 (I hated Nirvana till later in life). Ten, Dirt and Batmotorfinger collectively were one of the biggest revelations in music (to me) but to single out one wouldn't do justice to the rest.
What's that Vagina? No list?? SHADDUP!
Posted by: Chilli on September 28, 2005 02:23 PMScotty's new found appreciation for Rap?
(what's that whipping noise I hear from afar)
N.W.A...I say N.W.A.S....Not Worth A Shit
Posted by: metal vagina on September 28, 2005 02:01 PMOK, I'm kool. Back to the topic at hand, Top 5 Revelation Albums....
Blind Melon - Blind Melon was a great one!
Posted by: Chilli on September 28, 2005 11:23 AMChilli, take a chill pill. I enjoy ol'skool rap so be Kool Mo Dee, kay? Vag is the rap hater, not me. I was merely making a point that Scotty gets irrittated when when sway off topic a bit.
\m/
Killer - I'm sorry about Scotty's new found appreciation for rap, but you can't deny that Snoop, NWA and the Beastie Boys are fantastic. If you start seeing both of us posting about 50 Cent and Nelly, I give you full permission to kill us violently.
Vagina - Where's your list? Brian Adams, Lionel Richie & Sting (Desert Rose era) are going to be pissed! Until you provide an impressive list that doesn't include gay music you press the play button for at GT's every week... you will say nothing!
Posted by: Chilli on September 28, 2005 10:38 AMnot at all my favorite albums but made significant impacts on the rock idiom in my opinion...i will stay away from old archetypes (led zep, black sab , pink floyd , beatles , elvis and such)because we can always go back to "god created rock" which is boring to discuss
1. nirvana ...nevermind...boring rendition of art imitating life but nevertheless was a tsunami of influence to the laymen (and women) of music... made people believe anyone can be famous if you had a garage.
2. U2 achtung baby...i liked it when it came out but bored of it now. definatly ...and i hate to say this... influenced radioheads ingenious behavior...but radiohead did it better...
3. The Police....syncronicity...every half ass surfer reagae band of the nintys owes penance to this great achievement of fusion( like sublime)...god bless you sting!
4. jane's addiction...nothings shocking...of course this is my opinion ...but made swearing ok on the radio although just a seed to some of the shock bands of today (not mentioning alice cooper and black sabbath) took that old format and put neon lights on it ..metropolis folk music...not to mention made the chili peppers look cooler...
5. johnny cash ...american series...making country (yes thats right the other half of rock from blues) cool again is an outstanding achievement ...not my favorite of his music (being covers mostly) but an ingenious way to connect to the youth of today to show that every song is a country song ...much better at re educating the public than geogre lucas' attempt which just pissed of the older generation.
Out from the side hatch Gee has returned to the cowbell!!!! How aboot yur list?
BTW, don't be sorry to the uncool! vvrrmm...vvrrmm...vvrrmmmmmmmm
Scotty says, "I was cutting the grass with the cassette in my walkman...My Michelle."
Guy, are you sure that you weren't mowin' a lawn that was not yours, and that it was actually 'His Michelle' under your immediate appropriation with John Deer ah-ss-ist-ance?
How does it go Killerov? Vvvvrrrrrrmmmmm!!!
Sorry to those who don't know the history of this joke...
Posted by: radkin on September 28, 2005 04:38 AMIf Mr. Paton decides to do a topic on this site about Rap then you will not see any more posts from Vagina. (uh oh maybe that'll encourage him)
Posted by: metal vagina on September 28, 2005 03:13 AMCarefull Chilli! Scotty might go and string off a new category on rap if we keep talking about it! (he seems to like doing this lately).
Posted by: Killerov on September 28, 2005 01:29 AMNWA is definitely sweet! Easy-E is up there with the best in rap history. And Dr. Dre... a delight. Now that we're on rap - I have to throw in the Beastie Boys with both Ills (Licensed to Ill/Ill Communication)
Posted by: Chilli on September 27, 2005 04:29 PMGood one Chili. My fav rap album of all time is and still is NWA - Straight Outta Compton...a masterpiece from start to finish. "Ho go home and wash out that beaver"...Eazy-E was brilliant.
Posted by: Killerov on September 27, 2005 01:10 PMCan't forget about Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle... completely changed rap for the better!
Posted by: Chill on September 27, 2005 11:00 AMfuckin eh shout at the devil...i got it in grade 6 in the columbia house buy 12 tapes for a penny each deal......lol. that album opened my mind to distored detuned guitars with righteous solos! not too sure what my parents thought hearin "shout, shout, shout, shout at the devil" blaring from the basement. they times, they were a changin'
Posted by: Rosa on September 27, 2005 09:44 AM1. Appetite for Destruction: I loved this album (still do) so much that I drew the inside album sleeve pic of the alien raping the chick in the back alley on my grade 11 art portfolio. The teacher asked first if I was ok and I told her, "I just like the fucking cool picture."
2. Pearl Jam - Mookie Blaylock: Heard this for the first time cruisin' down the Dundas srip in my buddies '78 Camero Z28.....SWEET.
3. Neil Young - Silver and Gold: So relaxing I can't take it.
4. Radiohead - OK Computer: To this day I love getting naked in front of audiences to the ripping sounds of "Paranoid Android".
5. Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil: I can honestly say that this album single handedly took me to the darkside. Not all the way through solid, but enough to bring me to metal. \m/
1. Appetite For Destruction -i still refer to this album as being "the bible." introduction to slash was magnificant. Nighttrain did it for me, the work of both izzy and slash together made me stike a boner! and it introduced me to the awsomeness of the les paul!
2. Pantera - Vulgar display of Power - back from the dentist, sans wisdom teeth, and on a whole lot of valium and T3's. borrowed it from my brothers friend, put it on at like midnight, blew my mind. RIP Dimebag!
3. Pearl Jam- Ten- borrowed from a high school gf just before i left for a 3 day geography trip to collingwood....the walkman never left my ears, and i failed the class
4. Cash - what can i say "shot of cocaine" did it for me. sooo angry. thanks capt!
5. RATM-.....just finished installing my first stolen system into my car, and borrowed a buddies girlfriends sisters disk to test the fucker out.....she didn't get it back anytime soon
honorable mention- CCR-scotty,Alice in Chains-facelift-it aint like that anymore, driving to westmount to pick up some friends on a warm summer night. almost crashed the car. that riff gave me that sweet feeling you get right after a bj!
