Top 5 Tuesday Fifty-Five

Last night's killer Pearl Jam concert inspired me to go with today's posting, which i believe was originally suggested by the Captain, who was absent from last night's show, but his special lady was in fine whistling form accompanying the Rosa on his spare ticket. No word yet on whether or not the ass diaphragm was compromised.

Top 5 Concert DVDs

  1. Tenacious D - Complete Masterworks. Everyone knows how much i love the D, perhaps a little too much. I can sing pretty much every word sung and speak every word spoken during this beloved concert, and even have 2 copies of the dvd - one for each tv/dvd combo in the house. Fuck, yeah!!
  2. The Band - The Last Waltz. As i have mentioned many a time before, this performance comes to the proverbial desert island with me. Feel free to browse past top 5s for more words of high praise for this magical concert.
  3. Led Zeppelin - 2 DVD set. This fairly recent release blows The Song Remains the Same concert out of the water. Although inclusive of some of that concert footage, this spans an entire career of thunderous rock and roll, with a highlight for me being a few of the acoustic tunes they pull out whilst seated on stools. John Paul Jones is a freakin' genius.
  4. Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000. This was the only concert footage we had available to us while living in Budapest. With no tv, we fired this up on Dr. J's laptop dvd player from time to time while sipping on ice cold pints of Dreher. It was just like being there, sort of.
  5. Rage Against the Machine - Live at Grand Olympic Auditorium. A popular Friday night pre-bar warmup disc from the Palace era. So tight, so heavy, so funky. Also includes much of a second concert in the bonus features.

Honourable Mentions - AC/DC Live at Donington, Ben Harper Live at Hollywood Bowl.

holy shit chilli, i can't believe i forgot about the illusions...i worshiped that show in high school! my fave part was Night Train and Slash's solo to the Godfather! outrageous
i'm wet just thinkin about it!

Posted by: Rosa on September 14, 2005 10:53 PM

That last post was mine... damn Scotty's saved settings!

Posted by: chilli on September 14, 2005 09:18 PM

Oh Rosa! You should be proud that you're a male nurse. It's one step away from being a proctologist!

1. Tenacious D - Complete Masterworks. This dvd went into high rotation after I delivered a quote from a genius skit prior to seeing the dvd. Scotty's exact words (in the midst of hysterical laughter), 'I have to call the Captain!' Take note, I had no idea who the Captain was at this point. I was even able to successfully dvd-nap the D until Scotty graciously purchased a copy for me for Xmas. Scotty's a big fan of the Concert, but I'm all over the Road! I can out-quote Scotty on the Road any day! 'I think that was right!'

2. Dave Matthews - The Gorge. This show is a delight! I especially love the Grace is Gone footage.

3. Ani Difranco - Trust. I was lucky enough to see the T.O. show of this tour. She's is delicious live! A wonderful birthday gift.

4. Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago. This tape (yes VHS) basically includes the entire Grace album. Mmmmmmm, Jeff Buckley doing anything..... Captain played me a Westmount version of the Buckley. Let's just say I'm looking forward to his November return and I've never met the guy. (Take it easy.... Scotty, only excited about the jamming)

5. GNR - Illusions I & II. I think I memorized the entire 2 tapes. My fave was probably the Sweet Child O' Mine with Axl's intro. This was during my marrying Axl decade.

6. Festival Express. Good call Rosa! I had goose bumps when Janis Joplin sang Cry Baby.... holy shit!

Posted by: scotty on September 14, 2005 09:16 PM

Justine
1. i'm not a FUCKING nurse!
2. you missed my point
3. saw Plant pull up in the bus this afternoon
4. we may discuss this further at some point tonight!

Leaving for London,Plant in 3.5 hours :)Had Led Zeppelin in dvd playa all day in preperation!Feels like my wedding day!!Brass 2 follow...

Posted by: Batman on September 14, 2005 04:10 PM

never got too into the dvds, it just aint the same... although Petty Live at the Fillmore drew me in (still laughing steveo), and i'll watch the D anytime if scotty's dancing in front of it quoting... every. single. word.

Posted by: meg on September 14, 2005 11:40 AM

Justine, close your eyes and imagine jack black in school of rock... "Led Zepp-lin." + it was 12:10am and i was tired...forgive me?

Posted by: Rosa on September 14, 2005 11:30 AM

Wow!!So many great mentions I dont know if I can come up with a better-and not copied-list...
#1~Led Zeppelin-hell yah of course
#2~Led Zeppelin-A to Zeppelin:The Unauthorized story of..
#3~Led Zeppelin-The song remains the same
#4~Jimmy Page&Robert Plant:No Quarter
#5~Elton John:Dream ticket(special recommendation of the 'In four decades'cd song choice:Tiny Dancer-WOW!
(Steveo you how could you spell ZeppElin wrong?)
**ROBERT PLANT 2NITE FACKERS**

Posted by: batman on September 14, 2005 11:20 AM

1. Led Zep - the new one
2. Led Zep - Song Remains the Same
3. Band - The Last Waltz
4. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in NYC
5. Stevie Nicks in Concert (Bella Donna tour). Hard to go wrong when your backup band includes Russ Kunkel, Benmont Tench & Roy Bittan. (Ok.. this isn't officially available on DVD.. only VHS, but that is just a crime).

And Dylan - Don't Look Back, while not a concert film, per se, deserves mention.

funny story with petty at the fillmore, i was so taken by one of the songs, once it ended, i caught myself putting my drink down to applaud. it was obvious what i was about to do.......we laughed

capt, i may have you sign a waver before i release such an important dvd from a band you HATE

killer, your top two PJ's i need....i'll remind you of this closer to christmas before you visit!

Posted by: Rosa on September 14, 2005 10:02 AM

ah jes also the petty @ fillmore. of course fucking of course. add to hon. men.

Posted by: scotty on September 14, 2005 09:06 AM

1. Pearl Jam: Voters for Choice in DC '94 (the Vitalogy tour that people state never happened...saw them 4 times this tour). Even better because we filmed it. 3,500 fans and a great road trip.
2. Pearl Jam: Mexico City 2004. The band fed off the amazing crowd response and ROCKED even harder! \m/
3. Pearl Jam: Live at the Gardens. Actually caught this X-mas eve in Qarshi, Uzbekistan on some random satelight music channel. Very calming to see being that I was all alone in a fucked up part of the world w/only my Heineken to comfort me.
4. Pearl Jam: Touring Band 2000. A great collection of show performances and a tool to convert non fans to the darkside.
5. David Gilmore: Live in 2001. Awesome solo show.

Note: Every Pink Floyd concert goes hand in hand w/my top 5 as they were often viewed after the 'shrooms fully kicked in.

Posted by: Killer on September 14, 2005 05:08 AM

1. The Last Waltz--of course fucking of course.

4. Live at Montreaux--Johnny Cash
5. A Reality Tour--David Bowie

7 & 8 are both music DVD's and documentaries, but I will add them nonetheless:

4. Tom Petty Live from the Fillmore - kick ass rock show that makes me crazy
5. Festival Express -take a train, full of pot smoking alcoholic hippy musicians, with all the pot and booze they could possible consume (and they did actually run out of booze) and send them across this great country of ours causing rock n'roll mayhem........genius!

honorable mention- blue rodeo stereovision-greg keelor on dark angel melts me!, rage, the D, johnny cash in montreal, tom petty sound stage-yer so bad!, bowie
