Top 5 Tuesday XXXXVI

I think the Captain had mentioned this topic at some point, but i had forgotten it only to have it reappear as i was grasping for new topics. I think i initially dismissed it since i thought i wouldn't have enough to list but since i just scrawled down 10 options, it's on!

Top 5 Live Albums
  1. The Last Waltz - The Band. This is not only my favourite live album but one of my favourite albums of all time. I love The Band, and add in the fact that it was their last show with Robbie, plus an unending parade of fantastic guest artists made this a night, an album and a movie for the ages. The version of Helpless, with Neil, The Band and Joni Mitchell on backing vocal, is one of my favourite versions of any song, ever!
  2. Just Like A Vacation - Blue Rodeo. Blue Rodeo are one of those bands that are even better live than on record. This double live record captures them in 2000 at their finest. Add in a few guest musicians, plus a mix of hits and jammers and this should be on anyone's country-rock-pop top 5. This album saw me through some hard times while i was living over in Budapest. It's a keeper!
  3. Live - AC/DC. This album exists in both single and double cd versions. I have the single, as well as the full concert dvd and it fucking rocks hard! A great starter to any weekend. Ask anyone from my Palace days!
  4. Waiting for Columbus - Little Feat. My only Little Feat album, it contains a bunch of classics, some fab drumming, killer grooves and great jams. This one defines the mid-90s for me back in my jam band days!
  5. Live - Bob Marley. I'm sure this is second-to-own on the popular Marley list, right after Legend, but it still holds up to this day. Again there is a bonus release and the original release, which i own, and it contains some great live Bob hits, sing alongs and jams. The sound is great, the drums are sweet and the message is clear. My only complaint - more please!

hmmm i'm disappointed Live at the Greek was not up there, i'm sure it just skipped your mind scotty, or Zepplin live at the BBC (i wet myself). throw in Chains and Neil unplugged and i'm set! my last great one to pick (other than the waltz) would be the Petty, but i do believe that's only on dvd, but i'll include it anyway!!
so that makes a top 6, big deal!

Amy, Nice choices. But, everyone is a critic....

....Live 75-85 ....
I hesitate to call this a live album. I own most of the complete shows that this colection of live songs were taken from and whatever the record company did to them to get them on this "live" Album was a disaster. Most of the songs are cut and edited to death. If you are a Springsteen fan take it form the biggest one and get a copy of Winterland '78 or any other quality bootleg and listen to a complete show from that era .... outstanding!

Finally a Top 5 Tuesday where I have a list.. sorry, hair bands aren't my thing.

That said, I can't believe no one has mentioned the greatest live album ever!

1. Bruce Springsteen Live '75 - '85. Come on people!

2. Zep - How the West Was Won

3. Who - Live at Leeds

4. Bob Seger - Nine Tonight

5. Fleetwood Mac Live (from the 1980 tour, not The Dance)

and honorable mentions must be given to the Eagles Live, and (hello!) Cheap Trick at Budakan as well as Frampton Comes Alive.

Could I be more of a 70's freak?

I'm stuck on Jason Mraz Tonight Not Again Live at the Eagles Ballroom right now, so i'll throw that in, but no way is it a top pick.

First off...I'll agree on your #1 pick--The Last Waltz is a fucking masterpiece. However, the next 4 on your list..."but not on mine--how about the Beatles...how about fucking, fucking Beethoven..." First off: Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson Storytellers--the conversation is enough to satisfy, but the music is stellar. Next, The Quintet Live at Massey Hall 1953--pure genius (Rosa). Dizzy Gillespe, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. Need I say more? Al Green Live Tokyo 1978. Sweet sultry vibe from the man who made monogamy sexy. Ben Harper Live From Mars--this is a good one for rocking and then relaxing as it takes you from electric to acoustic over two discs of sweetness. For my last pick, I'll go with Jimmy Page & the Black Crowes Live at the Greek--speaks for itself. Honourable mention--Gomez-Out West, U2-Rattle & Hum, Neil Young-Unplugged, DMB-the last nine albums?!?, The Hip-Live Between Us, NIN-Coming Down Fast. (Anything to say, Vagina?)
