Top 5 Tuesday XXXXII

This entry is inspired by my old apartment, The Palace. Located directly above the bar that i play at every Saturday night, it has hosted many an after-party. A common theme, since everyone was all drunked up and it was quite late and all, was to play cheesy ballads and dance like you did at public school dances. So i am going to list my top 5 cheesy ballads in honour of The Palace. These are shameless cuts of cheese that you can't help singing at the top of your lungs when they come on. Notice there are no cock-rock 'power ballads' here. That is a separate genre all it's own, and will perhaps be addressed next week. Let's get it on!

Top 5 Cheesy Ballads (in honour of The Palace)

  1. Sister Christian - Night Ranger. This is the money shot. Played every Saturday night without fail, the song became expected, anticipated and participated. My former Palace roommate Metal Vagina has taken to pinching this for his current end-of-night dj dance-off.
  2. Against All Odds - Phil Collins. Watching some of the dvd of the Live Aid concert brought back the memory of this sappy classic. That, and some guy bastardized it beautifully years ago during our college entry performance auditions.
  3. You're the Inspiration - Chicago. As a kid, I couldn't stop singing this when it came on the radio. Of course when you're 12 you don't know what the fuck you're singing about.
  4. Take It On The Run - REO Speedwagon. Another Palace classic; very participatory. It actually made a vinyl appearance when played. Just think, the band is playing in the park this summer!!
  5. All Out of Love - Air Supply. Probably the kings of cheese, you could pick any of at least 6 classics here. Guy Jarvis and I used to sing along to the Supply together after we'd come home from the bar sloppy and empty-handed. Very touching.

Jackie,

You've forgotten "Hello" by Lionel Richie, "Arthur's Theme" (Best That You Can Do) by Christopher Cross, "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles, "Broken Wings" by Mister Mister and of course "Forever Young" by Alphaville. I think we're playing on the 17th at the Brass Door - perhaps we'll play everyone's suggestions. See you then?

Alright here goes....

1. Thin Red Line - Glass Tiger: A favorite ever since my grade 8 dances, and I still love singin' it in the shower.
2. Lady - Kenny Rogers - As Scotty said, a Palace fave.
3. What Does it Take - Honeymoon Suite: Hmmm...noticing a little Canadian trend here
4. Never Surrender - Corey Hart: Loved it ever since I took his picture to the hairdresser in grade 6 so I could be Corey Jr.
5. Heaven - Bryan Adams: Well, it helped coin the nickname so it's gotta be on here

man, if i was up dancing to it, it means i was probably too drunk to remember what songs were being played

Posted by: meg on June 7, 2005 04:52 PM

I think the ideas behind these songs best describe the after bar atmosphere at the palace

40 oz to Freedom - Sublime
Gin & Juice - Snoop Dogg
Cigarettes & Alcohol - Oasis
Jump Around - House of pain
Can't Get Enough Of You Baby - Smashmouth

(I just couldn't think of 5 cheesy ballads)

this top 5 just makes me embarrassed to have participated in this tradition in my drunken states

Posted by: meg on June 7, 2005 11:30 AM

Yes Scotty!!! But you were right...the wrong era. Being that this tradition was started after I left I cannot give a top 5, but was able to experience it the odd time. I must confront the lack of "Lady" by Kenny. Bring on the top 5 cheesie metal balads next week.
