Top 5 Tuesday XXXIII

Sorry i slacked off last week. Today, as a summer morning warmup and also as potential material for Justin's setlist, we are going to address the Top 5 Acoustic Songs (for a morning mix or a groovy setlist). Some of the good stuff could make my next mix cd currently in the works or even passed on to Justin as he pads his acoustic set with some upbeat "beachy" numbers for the summer patio scene. Keep in mind that my list won't include songs that are either on my current mixes or in Justin's set, so no berating me for leaving out killer stuff like Zeppelin! But you guys have at'er. I think we're all pretty straight forward here, so give'er!

Top 5 Acoustic Songs (for a morning mix or a groovy setlist)

  1. Ooh La La - The Faces. Everyone knows this track, although not by name, but if you hear it - "I wish.... that.... i knew what i know now, when i was younger.." I think it's also in a recent car commercial, but i think it's best use came at the end of Rushmore. How many of you left that movie singing that song? My hand is up.
  2. Remember - Hendrix. A great, bouncy little number that always throws out a positive vibe.
  3. Friend of the Devil or Bertha - Grateful Dead. Not sure which one to go with yet, as Justin is not a big Dead fan, but i think either one would be well-received by a beer-soaked, sun-drenched crowd.
  4. Copperhead Road - Steve Earle. I just dig it - rockin' vibe that really kicks when the song kicks in.
  5. Diamonds on the Inside - Ben Harper. From his latest album, this is a great track that would fit the bill for a mix cd or a new crowd fave at a show. Is this his first single? I'm not sure, but it would make a great one.

1 breakin the girl- chilli's
2 pardon me - incubus (i think one is way better acoustically then the album version)

4 personal jesus - johnny cash ( man o man a kick ass version)
5 bubbletoes - jack johnson (very cool groove)

These songs are in no particular order.

Sugar Mountain - Neil Young
Images of innocence lost and late 60's folk guitar are one and the same.

Have You Forgotten - Red House Painters
Probably the the closest to my perspective on the transition from and differences between child to adult that I've heard in song.

Dinosaur Act - Low
Can't really figure out what the song is about.
I've heard that Low are mormons... maybe I don't want to know what it's about.

Mozzarella Swastikas - Adam Green
Adam's a crazy kid from NYC. Completely nonsensical brilliance.

A Case of You - Joni Mitchell
Let's hold a referendum to make THIS our national
anthem.

5. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
4. Song Number 11 off Fight for your Mind - Ben Harper
3. Wonderland - John Mayer
2. Pardon Me - Incubus (saw it live!)
1. Surf Wax America - Weezer, good call on that one Mandy. I think that was the number 1 song we played in my car.

Honourable Mention: Tiny Dancer - Elton John.

I'm struggling with this one, Scotty... it's too hard.

1 - 4 Almost any song by Bob Dylan
5 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac

Ummmm... might not exactly be upbeat beachy music, BUT, they are not as "sad bastard" as usual (for the most part).
1) Surf Wax America - Weezer. One of my favourite summer songs, and I think... yes, it sure could go acoustic.
2) Warning - Incubus.
3) Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd. Best damn Floyd song ever!
4) She - Green Day. What?? It could be done.
5) Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd. This song screams summer.

wow this one is really hard for me. i hate to admit it but i don't listen to a lot of acoustic stuff. live stuff, yes. acoustic, not really. but, here goes:

1. Me & Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin (off the live/boxset collection)

2. Dancing Nancies - Dave & Tim (just listening to one of those live shows last night in the car!)

3. Cecelia - Simon & the Garfunk

4. Ripple - the Dead

5. Freebird - Phish :)

There should also be some acoustic Van Morrison on there somewhere if you can find it. i would kill to get my hands on an acoustic version of "astral weeks" or "beside you". but i'm not sure those are really "party" songs.

A category I cannot escape from:

#5) A Girl like You - Pete Yorn.
This song will not get outta my head.

#4) No Rain - Blind Melon
Old School but still good

#3) Dark Eyes - Bob Dylan
Circa '85 - The only decent track on the very poor Empire Burlesque album. Look for it.

#2) Wonderwall (Cover) - Ryan Adams
Sweet Al still loves him his Ryan Adams.

#1) #41 - Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds Version
BEST SONG EVER.

whew. "sigh"

so do I...Woodie Guthrie - House of the Rising Sun
John Prine - Picture Show
Joan Baez - John Riley
Keith Welsh - Snow in PA
James Tally - Red Wing

Ok Well I have to answer this one...

1. I'll Be (Acoustic version) - Edwin MCCain
In my mind one of the most underrated but best songs I have heard.

2. Curbside Prophet - Jason Mraz
The excellent use of the banjo is just the right touch and a bounce that just doesn't stop.

3. More Than Words - Extreme
I think i chose this one for the clessic beat kept with the hand and the incredible harmonies.

4. My Stupid Mouth - John Mayer
The acoustic version of just a good song.

5. Weight on my shoulders - Pete Kyrie Band
I would be fool not to include my own song on this list...a fool i say!

So many....so many...to choose from....acoustic music saves lives!!!
