Top 5 Tuesday XXXII

Better late than never, eh? So with some slight encouragement we will delve into the world of sports for the first time and list our personal Top 5 Sports Memories (preferably for your country, but not necessarily). This topic as you can see from my previous posting is inspired and in honour of Mike Weir's achievement from the past weekend. This doesn't have to be on an international scale, either. If your high school football memories top your list, a la Al Bundy, then by all means share.

Top 5 Sports Memories

  1. Blue Jays - World Series Champs '92 (& '93). Pandemonium ensued in downtown London as we all took to the streets to celebrate this first among Canadian baseball feats. My first "chaotic streets" experience.
  2. Canadian Olympic Hockey Gold Medal '02. I was in Budapest for this, and how i longed to be back in the homeland for the mayhem and sheer joy and pride the event brought to us. We had a nifty little party of our own though, with 11 Canadians and 2 Americans (plus a couple of Norwegians and Brits) gathered around a TV for the historic game. Gretzky seen mouthing "Fucking Eh!" at the end was priceless.
  3. Mike Weir - Masters Champion '03. As mentioned before, a feat never before accomplished by a Canadian golfer. Mike has done for golf in Canada what Tiger has done for the sport overall. Oh Canada!
  4. Toronto Argonauts - Grey Cup Champs '91 (& '96,'97). I loved the CFL back then, and my boys bringing home the Cup was the sweetest of sweet! Doug Flutie bringing the back to back Cups several years later didn't hurt either.
  5. Donovan Bailey - 100m Olympic Gold '96. This was also heavy at the time, and sweet redemption for the Ben Johnson drug fiasco that tainted Canadian sprinting up until this point.

Honourable Mentions - I would like to mention Stanley Cup runs by both my Islanders and the Oilers in the 80s, but these are more like legendary overall event memories than specific moment memories themselves, so they reside, while no less important, in the honourary category.

My top 5 sports memories? HMMMMM!

5) Toronto Blue Jays Game - Grade 7 class trip, 1990. We didn't get home till after 2 am and that was soooooo cool when your 12. We went to see Phantom of the Opera before the game too. It was just a great trip all around.

4) London Tigers Baseball Game - 1989. My Dad took my brother and I to a game, and I ended up getting hit in the shin with a foul ball. My brother ran down under the bleachers and fought off some other kids to get me the ball. Then the trainer for the Tigers got me ice and the whole team to sign the ball.

3) Hockey Players VS. TV Personalities - can't remember the year, probably 1987 or 88. My sister took my brother and I to this game. It was at the arena at Western. Godie Howe was the biggest name (hockey player) that was there. On the personalities side it was, Chip & Pepper, Alan Thicke, Matt Freuer (sp?), and last but certainly not least Matthew Perry (before he was Chandler, but after he was Carol Seaver's boyfriend). Jason Preistly was supposed to be there too, but for some unknown reason couldn't make it to the London game.

2) London Knights VS. Toronto Maple Leaf's Old Timers - 1991. Not only did I get to see Tiger Williams, Lanny McDonlad and Daryl Sittler play, but I also got to see my Unlce, Pat Boutette. I also got to see my Grandpa tell Tiger Williams off. It was great!

1) The Men's and Women's Canadian Hockey Teams both winning the Gold Medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics! A crowning moment for Canada. Both games we beat the US. Nough said!!

Honourable mentions: Super Bowl 2001. I still couldn't tell you who played, but Michelle had an all girls Superbowl party. We ate sooooooo much food and watched the Survivor Premier that aired after the Superbowl. Good times!

Here is one I can really get excited about!

2002 - 2003 Syracuse University Men's Basketball: not just the National Championship, not just the Final 4.. the whole season from Carmelos' 27 points against Memphis in Nov. to Hakim's blocked shot in the last game, made me smile.
1984 Boston Celtics - NBA Champions: Celtics/Lakers, Bird/Magic - what else can you ask for?
1986 Boston Celtics - NBA Champions: The Celtics 3rd championship in 6 years: yee-haw!
1984 - BC v. Miami - the hail mary of all hail mary passes. And young girls all across Massachusetts swoon over Doug Flutie and Gerard Phelan.
1987 - Syracuse Goes to the Final 4 - still my favorite Syracuse team of all time, but had to move to 5 because it ended so tragically. Only now that we have acheived the glory that we deserved am I starting to recover.

Honorable Mentions: 1987: Syracuse Football's whoop-assing of Penn State, the game (v. UConn as I recall) that Sherman Douglas became the all time NCAA assist leader (and he is still #5 on that list!), 2002: Sara Hughes in the olympics, 1985: Boris Becker at Wimbledon, the time in HS when my coach took a swing at the coach from the other team. The other coach was so mad, the meet was canceled and we were ejected from the other high school's property (ha!) and my very first sports hero: Dorothy Hamill 1976 figure skating gold medal.

oh yeah, and i guess there was that thing with my alma mater (Michigan) winning the Rose Bowl the year i graduated (98). that was cool.

i definitely don't have a top 5 in this category. the only sports events i can really remember would be:

1. Lance Armstrong and the 1999 Tour de France - because my boyfriend made me watch all of it.
2. The Giants in the World Series last year - because my boss wouldn't stop talking about it.
3. The Detroit Tigers winning the World Series 1984 - because we were so surprised.
4. The 1999 World Cup because i somehow ended up watch most of that too.
5. The 1996 Summer Olympics - because my college roommate made me watch all of it.

Mine are:

1) Florida State wins national college football championship: 1994 and 2000

2) US Hockey team wins gold: 1980

3) My first major league baseball game (Yankees at Indians -- Indians won): 1997

4) 1992 NL Playoffs Pirates at Braves: while not a "favorite" b/c of the outcome, the memory is very strong and I can rant and rave about it like it was yesterday

5) (tie) Cal Ripken's record-breaking "hey, I always come to work" game and Mark McGuire's record-breaking homer

Honorable mentions: Penn State versus Miami and Joe Montana on "SNL" saying "I think I'll go to my room and masturbate." (both 1986 I believe)

I agree with 4 of your 5 choices...I would exchange the Argos for the Mariners beating the Yankess in the ALDS in 1995.

Well,
There was this one time in grade 7.
I had a cast on my leg but I decided to play soccer anyway.
I parked myseld in front of the oppositions Net.
Unmoveable like Ciccerelli...
Corner kick,
I head the ball into the net,
Shit...
That was great...
