Top 5 Tuesday XXXI

Today we are going with a reader submission as a topic. Amy has suggested the very cool Top 5 Greatest Hits Albums. These are a completely different animal than an official album release; in some cases these hits albums contain all the songs that most people will ever hear from a certain band. This can lead to fantastic new discoveries when you actually search out the full records that each of these hits came from and listen to that as a complete entity. This has happened to me on a few occasions and i have been more than stoked to expand my listening horizons. So, enough ramblin', and onto the list.

Top 5 Greatest Hits Albums
  1. CCR - Chronicle. The definitive summer party/driving album, this was the only CCR i owned for the longest time. I have since expanded into all their works, and it is worth the trip!
  2. Steve Miller's Greatest Hits. 3 words - High. School. Parties.
  3. James Brown's 20 All-Time Greatest. JB lays down the funk funk with all his classics, and some slightly lesser known jams, but it's all good, it's all solid, and you always shake your ass off. We're gonna have a funky good time.
  4. Blues Brothers Greatest Hits. Some studio tracks mixed with some live tracks, these guys are having fun the only way they know how. White boy blues for the people!
  5. Paul Simon - Negotiations and Love Songs 71-86. Me and Julio were talking about 50 ways to leave our lovers late in the evening down by the schoolyard as we heard a train in the distance. We decided we were still crazy after all these years since she still had diamonds on the soles of her shoes and we changed our names to Al.

Let the lesson begin:

#5) R.E.M. - Eponymous
All the good early stuff that makes you wonder where this band came from and how we lived without them.

#4) The Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
If you don't know Elvis, you should and this is as good a place as any to start.

#3) David Bowie - ChangesBowie. Get you some Ziggy Stardust and Essential Bowie.

#2) Bob Marley - Legend. No explanation required.

#1) Neil Young - Decade. Essential.

Honourable mentions:

Tom Petty - Greatest Hits, Bourbon Tabernacle Choir 85-85, Hendrix - Ultimate Experience, The Police - Greatest Hits, Crowded House - Recurring Dream and on and on and on and on....
