Top 5 Tuesday XXVII

This week's topic should hit home for a lot of people, since i don't know anyone who hasn't spent hours selecting tracks to build the perfect mix tape (or more recently CD) for that perfect occasion or special someone. The beauty of these homemade collections is that when the dust has settled and the recording is done, you get to appropriately name your masterpiece. My list is just as much about the content and purpose of the mixes as it is about the titles, and i'm sure there are some outrageous titles that will make an appearance, so dig out those old cassettes or new CDs that you have lovingly assembled into the soundtrack of your life and list it in the Top 5 Mix Tape Names.

Top 5 Mix Tape Names
  1. You Put Your Weed In There - Vols. I-IV. My original collection of jambands and road music featured everything from The Dead, Allmans, Jimi and The Doors to The Tea Party, ARU and moe. Four volumes were created with subtitles such as Granola, Love and Grooviness and The Time and Space Continuum. Ya, i was in a couple of jambands during this time period, can ya tell?
  2. Funkmobile Soundtrack. This was the soundtrack for my first car, a 1982 Buick Regal with the velvety seats, half vinyl roof and wire-spoked hubcaps. The musical selections were all funky jams, including Sly, Funkadelic, Parliament, James Brown and many more. This was my most bootlegged tape by my friends, and i think it turned a lot of them on to the ways of the funk.
  3. On The Road Again & Road II: Back to Maine. These bad boys were each created for the two back to back trips to Maine that the boys and i took to see Phish in Limestone, for both The Great Went and Lemonwheel. Tracks included some holdover bands from the Weed in There mixes, like some Dead, Allmans, etc. - the good driving stuff - and included some nice road additions like Willie Nelson, CCR, Zappa, Steve Miller, Phish et al.
  4. Funked-up, Groovy-ass, Jam till ya Slam Mix. My best overall title, this one contained danceable grooves from both old school and new school, such as Mike Jackson, Prince, The Time and Jamiroquai.
  5. Rockus for the Cockus - Vols. I-IV. I can't claim credit for this title (that honour goes to Metal Chris) but i can claim to be co-assembler, along with Killer Dave, of 3 kickass CDs full of cock rock. There are hairbands-a-plenty here, from Poison, GnR, Skid Row and the Crue to rockers AC/DC, The Four Horsemen and early Alice in Chains, who actually came out on the tail end of the hair band trip (I saw them open for Van Halen in Toronto). Metal Chris and I then created volume 4 of this monstrosity at a later date. Strap on your leather pants and hang on for the ride!

hey Scott ... I know this isn't the place for personsal messages but .........
We made it safe and sound to New Zealand ..... and you will never guess who was on the plane from Toronto to LA....... Robbie Robertson!
We also saw Daniel Lanois in the airport ...... Two Canadian superstars in one day!!!
New Zealand is really great so far.... a little chilly..... 18-20 degrees.....guess it's all relative. Heading to Wellington today and then it's on to the south island ......
I'II try to check it to the top five when I can....
How about Favorite top 5 non-north american bands????

Later,
Brian

Umm including all discs from roomates as well:

The Rock Vol 1&2
All the ACDC GNR Loud Sloan and Stones you can handle. Props to Colin Oswin for a headbanging compilation.

Elwood Soul
My favourite tracks from and inspired by the Blues Brothers etc
James Brown, Sam & Dave, Aretha to Soloman Burke and the Isley Bros. Plus Wilson Pickett and Booker T and the MG's. The first disc I burned when I got my burner and a crowd favourite for sure.

Covers Vol#1
I have an unhealthy fixation on cover tunes. This disc features such notable selections as Dave Grohl covering Creed's With arms wide open, Beck and Beth Orton taking on the Stones' No Expectations. Mary Lou Lord's chilled out take on Van Halen's Jump and Evan Dando's odd takes on 80's classic Missing you and Whitney Houstons How will I know.

Bobby Knight Mega Mix
Songs as angry as the NCAA coach himself leading off with Bobby Knight screaming at his players. You get Blurtonia, The Rheostatics, Oasis, By Divine Right, Guided by Voices, Smashing Pumpkins and more.

Done.
