Top 5 Tuesday XXIII

I was getting a bit bored of the Top 5s, to be honest, but last week produced a fair number of interesting comments, so i'm back again this week to post one of my earlier suggestions - Top 5 Deceased artists to go back and see in concert if you could time travel. This includes individuals or full bands that have dead guys. Advanced warning - my list may slightly exceed 5. :)

Top 5 Deceased artists to go back and see in concert if you could time travel

  1. The Doors. Anyone who knows me knows that i would give my left nut to be able to go back and see Jim and the boys in their prime. I have this killer book compiled by some nut that went back and researched every Doors performance, complete with date, location, venue and set lists - any Deadhead would be familiar with this type of dedication in the Deadbase volumes - so i could even research the exact show that i would like to attend, should time travel become an option in the future.
  2. The Band. I saw The Band back in 90-91, but that was without Richard Manuel and of course without Robbie, but was still a great show as Levon could still sing back then. A performance by the original Band would be second to none. I would actually give my other nut to be able to go back and attend The Last Waltz.
  3. Jimi. Nuff said.
  4. Bob Marley. I can only imagine the love and positive vibes that must have spread over a Marley show. Before they started making attempts on his life, that is.
  5. Zeppelin. Bonham was a madman. He was the first rock guy that i styled my drumming after. Bonham's two hour drum solo? You couldn't handle that shit on strong acid, man!
  6. Honourable Mentions - The Dead (have seen them, but back with Pigpen would be stellar), The Clash, Janis, Allman Bros. (have seen many times, but back with brother Duane), Blind Melon (again), Blues Brothers, Nirvana.

So, then, Tom Fogerty isn't dead anymore?
Well, I'm so relieved.
You don't see too many recoveries from death.
God bless modern science (and jaded bloggers).

hats off to t-nutz for bringing zappa into the fold. the only other point i have to bring up here is that Phish aren't dead!

Posted by: scotty on February 1, 2003 12:28 PM

1. Phish
(Every band on all of these lists, rolled into one. Take the Beatles and add improvisational genius. If for some reason you've never chosen to listen to a live CD or go to a show, buy Live Phish 14 )
2. Beatles
(Revolutionary)
3. Led Zeppelin
(Used to get made fun of for listening to them in 7th grade, non-stop.)
4. Frank Zappa
(Once you get past his lyrics you realize what you're actually listening to. The Ravel of the 20th century.)
5. Bob Marley
(Probably one of the greatest musicians to ever walk the face of the earth.)

Oh - And I'm reading this great book called "Miles Davis - The Definitive Biography" by Ian Carr. Essential for anyone who is remotely interested!!

3. Nirvana
4. The Beatles

al, that is bittersweet for sure. i must get up there to pay respects one day. i will also second the vote for Keith and the Who. i will also add Funkadelic with Eddie Hazel to the list. and on it goes...

Posted by: scotty on January 29, 2003 09:43 AM

Ok I agree with pretty much everybody else so here are a few more that would have been nice:

#5) Curtis Mayfield
#4) Nick Drake
#3) Original Manic Street Preachers Lineup
#2) Original Stones Lineup with Brian Jones
#1) The Who with Keith Moon

Finny: Oddly enough during university I worked for a couple of summers as a landscaper at the Avondale Cemetery in Stratford Ont, which happens to be The final resting place of Stratford Native Richard Manuel. Many a time in the summers of '95 and '96 did I painstakingly clear off his tombstone while listening to It Makes No Difference or The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

True Story. I often fantasized that Dylan would poke around one day especially when he played London in '95. Alas no Joker.
