Top 5 Tuesday XVI

This week's list moves back into the realm of film, and those oft-viewed classics that you never seem to tire of, that "best friend" of a movie that is there for you night in and night out. You know every line of dialogue, every scene, every note of music on the soundtrack, and still you look forward to the next time the mood strikes you and you reach for it one more time. These aren't necessarily the movies you've seen the most number of times, like finding Footloose on the Saturday afternoon movie for the millionth time and watching again for the hell of it, but movies you pop in because you really want to. This week's title is Top 5 Movies You Can Watch Again, and Again and Again... (Subtitled: The First Movies I Will Buy on DVD When I Finally Get a DVD Player.)

Top 5 Movies You Can Watch Again, and Again and Again...

  1. High Fidelity. I can watch this movie for the rest of my life, i think, and not become tired of it. Especially good after a breakup, Cusack brings it home with one of his best performances, and the soundtrack and Jack Black round it out in top form. Est. # of viewings: 30-ish.
  2. Dazed and Confused. One of the ultimate "I'm not partying right now so lets throw on a good-time party movie" movies. Est. # of viewings: high 30's.
  3. Eyes Wide Shut. From what i gather this is a love-it-or-hate-it movie. Obviously i'm in the love-it category. The story is so deliberate in it's pace and dialogue, with vivid colours at every turn, that it just sucks me right in every time. Est. # of viewings: mid-teens.
  4. Almost Famous. Although my viewings total is on the low side, probably due to the fact that i don't own it and rent or borrow it every time i want to see it, it's one of the ultimate rock rides contained on film, and will probably be the first DVD i acquire when the time comes. Est. # of viewings: high single digits.
  5. The Big Lebowski. Classic Coen Bros. Classic Soundtrack. Classic Comedy. This dude abides! Est. # of viewings: high-teens.

Honourable Mentions: Top Secret!, Swingers, The Doors, Dumb and Dumber, Spinal Tap.

Your timing couldn't be better. I've been sick the last week, and have spent a lot of time at home and watching my favorite movies.

1. Meet Me in St. Louis - It's an old movie, but has become a family tradition. When ever my whole family is together we watch it and we all know the whole movie by heart.

2. Ferris Buler's Day Off - It's a classic 80's Cult Movie!!

3. Breakfast Club - Again a classic 80's cult movie! Plus it's the brat pack, what more could you ask for??!!

4. Usual Suspects - Just watched this the other night. My friend Matt ownes it. Who is Kaiser?? Great Movie!!!

5. Clerks - I love Kevin Smith's humour. I also like how it is filmed in black and white and still became sooo popular!

Honourable Mentions - How High (just watched it agian last night), Dazed and Confused, Clueless, and Snatch.

In no particular order...

1. Forrest Gump - O.K. go ahead and laugh at me but this is probably my all time favourite, I've watched this at least 20 times.

2. Dogma - This one never fails to make me laugh. There's also the added bonus of watching this movie with a Dogma virgin, the looks of horror/disbelief/disgust/confusion on their faces are always amusing. I've seen this one 12+ times.

3. Shawshank Redemption - I still cry and I've probably seen it more than 25 times. Enough said.

4. Gladiator - mmmmmmmmmm Russell Crowe. The story and the cinematography (is that right?) in this movie still blow me away every time I see it. I love it.

5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off - I watched this movie the very first time I skipped school (I was only 6 or 7 at the time - bad Mandy). After seeing this at least 30 times, I still want to be Ferris.

honourable mentions - Being John Malkovich, the Usual Suspects, Enemy of the State, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and Aladdin.

I've never seen 3 or 4, so maybe I'll have to do that. I'm not a big fan of Cruise or Kidman, though. My girlie list is posted. :)
