Top 5 Tuesday XIII

They are everywhere, and have been since the history of rock music began. I'm talking about the one hit wonder, and they are the subject of this week's Top 5 listing. Whether you view the artist as lame for only pumping out a single hit, or respect them for even getting to that point in their careers, they are here to stay. So dust off those fave records that nobody has heard or everyone has forgotten and let's get down to it.

Top 5 One Hit Wonders

  1. Black Betty - Ram Jam. Riffs. Attitude. Huge fills. Harmonious guitars. Tempo changes. My stereo volume goes to 11 every time this tune comes on the radio. That, and i get the image of Johnny Depp cruising through the airport ever-so-smoothly in a white suit with 2 suitcases of coke.
  2. Jungle Love - The Time. One of my favourite funky jams of all time, Morris Day and The Time were the highlight of Purple Rain for me, and ruled the world for this brief moment in time. Just ask Jay and Silent Bob!
  3. American Pie - Don McLean. The ultimate one-hit wonder, this song is a classic no matter how you slice it. Madonna should be shot for her butchery of this track.
  4. The Time Warp. I don't even know who wrote this, and for all i know it could be some famous writer of all soundtrack music ever made, but if you don't get up and jump insanely around the room when this comes on you'd better be missing your legs.
  5. Then I Got High - Afroman. This song amused me for a very brief moment in time last year, but it was a very funny moment. Where the hell is Afroman now??

I wasn't making an attack on your Paula. Just offering my opinion. Sorry if you were in any way offended! :)

Unfortunatly here Semisonic just didn't get anymore big hits. They will always be known as the band who sang that song called Closing Time, by most people. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Kiwis are more appreciative. I know most of the people that post on this site, personally (and they aren't Kiwis), and I know that they all appreciate great music when they hear it. I also know that they all have a great knowledge of music, so I wouldn't make such a bold statement. Semisonic is great. Like I said before, I do own their CD and I do enjoy it, but unfortunatly the other singles that they have released just haven't hit it big. Some times that happens. At least we are able to enjoy the music that they have made.

'Secret Smile' was rather large here in NZ, actually. 'Chemistry' and 'Singing In My Sleep' still get a tonne of airplay as well. Of course, Dan Wilson getting together with Bic Runga for 'Good Morning, Baby' didn't hurt their popularity in New Zealand. But maybe we Kiwis are more appreciative than most?! I dunno.

Posted by: maddy on November 19, 2002 04:14 AM

Can you name another BIG hit that Semisonic has had?? If so, then I stand corrected. I do own their album and think it's great, but they haven't had a big hit since Closing Time. If I'm wrong, please let me know!

Posted by: Paula on November 18, 2002 03:37 PM

Semisonic does not belong on a one-hit wonder list!!!!

Posted by: maddy on November 18, 2002 02:48 AM

I have more to add to my list. I was watching Much Music yesterday and they had a special on One Hit Wonders. How perfect is your timing Scott??!!

Here are some of the videos that I saw that deserve to be mentioned. All great songs, too bad the bands didn't do anything more.

- The Feelin' That I Get, Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
- You Get What You Give, New Radicals: Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson, Courtney Love and Marliyn Manson.
- Crossroads, Bone, Thugs & Harmony
- I'm A Bitch, Meridith Brooks
- Just a Friend, Biz Markee
- Brimful of Asha, Cornershop: Everyone needs a bossom for a pillow! This would have been my number 2.
- Teenage Dirtbag, Wheatus: Tube socks, Irocs, and Iron Madien, everything you need in a one hit wonder.
- Groove is in the Heart, Dee-Lite: Gotta love the slide whistle.
- Scooby Snacks, Fun Lovn' Criminals
- Closing Time, Semisonic
- Kiss Me, Sixpence None the Richer

Having been able to have some time to ponder this, my list deffinetly would change.

Again I'm late! I know, I know. It is hard to get on to the internet when you don't have access to a computer at home.

I like this weeks topic. I remember when you came up with the idea. We were in my car and Black Betty was playing on the radio. Ohhhhh! Good times! Unfortunatly I could only come up with 4. Don't have much time here. It sucks when you don't get to use the internet for free!

Here goes:
4) Tubthumping - Chumbawumba. It was great song to hear at the bar.

3) Steal My Sunshine - Len. Still a great summer time beach song.

2) Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice. The guy is still trying to make a come back, but I don't think so!

1) Breakfast at Tiffany's- Deep Blue Something. I have always loved that song. It would be in my list of top 5 favorite songs for sure!

ya - canadian, or Fargo? ya, eh! i'm actually wearing a dark green sweater! craaaaazy greenness vibes happening.

Posted by: scotty on November 14, 2002 01:07 AM

This "ya" instead of "yeah" thing makes me laugh (quietly). Is that some sort of Canadian thing?

I like green, too. In fact, I'm wearing a green top right now. What are you wearing? ;)

Posted by: maddy on November 14, 2002 12:58 AM

ya, the greens were becoming a little too, well, green. it is still my fave colour and this will have to do until i actually put a design to the damn page. if only other work didn't pull rank on the personal stuff i'd be all set! soon enough, i keep telling myself...

Posted by: scotty on November 13, 2002 07:37 PM

I see you've been playing with the colour scheme. Nicer. Not that I'm not a big fan of khaki... ;)

good to see everybody in fine form today. thanks for the info and the MT suggestions. I'll get on it eventually! Also, welcome to Zorbs and your first Top 5 Tuesday! Keep at'er, even if you are a Leafs fan. :)

Posted by: scotty on November 12, 2002 08:11 PM

oh, and the Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians album "shooting rubberbands at the stars" is an EXCELLENT album, all the way through. one of my favorites, actually.

Posted by: leblanc on November 12, 2002 05:25 PM

my absolute favorite one hit (or two hit) wonder is Golden Earring - "twilight zone" is one of my favorite songs to rock out to :)

Posted by: leblanc on November 12, 2002 05:19 PM

And I'm with Zorbs - add in TrackBack, will ya? ;)

Posted by: maddy on November 12, 2002 04:04 PM

1, 2 and 5 from Pete's list could easily be on mine (which I've posted)! There are so many choices out there!

Posted by: maddy on November 12, 2002 04:03 PM

Richard O'Brien wrote Time Warp, I believe. He lived in NZ for the longest time, before taking RHPS to the world.

Posted by: maddy on November 12, 2002 04:02 PM

Umm:

#5) Cult of Personality - Living Colour (I know they wee around for a while after this and Vernon Wells has done tons of other stuff but they never really topped this single right?)

#4) All the Kids are Right - Local H (Ok maybe it wasn't a hit but it should have been. Drum?Guitar duos rock. These two were the White Stripes before the White Stripes...)

#3)Michael Penn - No Myth (Criminal that radio never really played any more of his stuff. Mr. Aimee Mann kicks ass - He called his last album MP4)

#2) Dave Navarro - Rexall (I liked the first single and heard the rest of a pretty mediocre album. "Sigh".)

#1) There She Goes - The La's (Covered by pretty much everyone the original kicks everyone's ass)

Not too shabby off the top o' me noggin;.

Please upgrade your MT so that you have trackback...thanks

Posted by: Zorbs on November 12, 2002 12:27 PM

Sorry, I tried to fix the spelling in world but I was too late...I know how anal you are about that Scotty, so I apologize. ;)

Posted by: Skinny Pete on November 12, 2002 10:19 AM

Ok let's see....

1. Breakfast at Tiffany's - Classic track, I do not believe that there was another from Deep Blue Something. Most people do not even have a clue of the bands name.

2. Mickey - Toni Basil, I remember I had to have this album, it was the coolest song and I don't think I even listen to the rest of the record.

3. In a Big Country - Big Country. I used to listen to this one while riding on the train back and forth from TO to London on my walkman...classic anthem solo.

4. 867-5309(Jenny) - Tommy Tutone. Name another phone number that the whole whorld knows.

5. What I am - Edie Brickell. The coolest guitar sound I have ever heard.
