How many of you really felt bad for the Ikea lamp?
(thanks to Catherine's blog for reminding me to post this. [she felt bad.])
UPDATE: The lamp commercial, directed by Spike Jonze, can currently be seen online at unboring.com. Click the TV set to view the commercial.
Posted by scotty at September 26, 2002 09:38 AMI felt worse for the lamp than I did when bambi's moma died.
I just saw the commercial for the first time and it's heart wrecking. I felt so bad Icouldn't stop thinking about it.
I actually will go so far as to saw that this commercial is a political one. Ikea wants us to identify with the haves (have money, have housing, have time to go get furniture) and forget the have nots (it's not our fault anyway and do they really have feelings?).
leblanc where do you come from? Where I am we all put our trash out on the curb to be picked up by the garbage men. Unless of course you live in an apartment. Well I suppose they do things differently in the bay area.
Anyway I felt sorry for the lamp. laughed my ass off when the guy came on though
you kill me! :) that lamp was so cute. have you ever snagged anything good down there?
Posted by: scotty on October 30, 2002 05:26 PMyou know, i FINALLY just saw the lamp commercial (i'm way behind here), although i didn't feel bad for the lamp, it actually made me angry (surprise...). maybe you don't have the problem in your neighborhoods of people leaving all kinds of household crap out on the curb, basically garbage, thinking that some other person is going to really want your smelly old couch or broken lamp or computer that doesn't work, but here in the Bay Area it's an AWFUL problem. just this morning on my block there was a desk, a couch, and an old tire, just sitting out on the curb. it makes the whole city look like a dump, and this commerical just made it seem like it was OK to just throw your old lamp outside, because hey! you got a new one. apparently they don't have urban littering and pollution in sweden or wherever the hell all that Ikea crap comes from, eh?
Posted by: leblanc on October 30, 2002 12:28 PMyou guys are crazy! eet's only a lamp - eet haz no feelings.
Posted by: laura on September 27, 2002 10:34 PMWould you be surprised if I told you that I felt sorry for the lamp? I didn't think so! I'm such a big loser!
Posted by: Paula on September 27, 2002 06:17 PMi, obviouisly, did feel bad for the little lamp. i'm also prepared to take this one step further and actually resent the hell out of the new lamp. did you see her lovingly touch the lamp after she turned it off?? all the while, little red's outside watching in the rain!!
it just pulled at my heartstrings, man.
you'll know the commercial when you see it. it will make you laugh and say "i really felt badly for that lamp!" and i couldn't agree more about the cowbell AND the hihats. a girl after my own percussive heart. bitches brew is a killer cover, and the choice was so hard since there are so many as you said, so i wouldn't discount it, it just didn't make the current list. the list would very well be completely different if i made it up next week. but american beauty would still be up there. :)
Posted by: scotty on September 26, 2002 06:27 PMwhat the hell are you talking about?
oh and i wanted to say that i ALWAYS need more cowbell -- and more open highhat. or closed. but LOTS of it. :-)
Posted by: leblanc on September 26, 2002 02:29 PMI'm kind of sad to admit that I too felt sorry for the lamp. After all he was a cute little lamp and what did he ever do to offend anyone? Kudos to the guys that thought that one up.
Posted by: Mandy on September 26, 2002 01:40 PMIt's only a lamp right???
That has to be one of the best advertisments for IKea that I have ever seen. I felt bad for that stupid lamp and those poor creamers. I think I need help!!!!!!
