Top 5 Tuesday VI - The Visual List

I have applied my most extensive legwork to date (it was fun) to bring you this week's top 5 list, but as you will see it was necessary to convey my points accurately and enjoyably. Using a musical (and visual) theme once again (notice a trend?), i bring you my Top 5 Album Covers. While i don't expect anyone to go to this extent (or even to comment, for that matter - i'm still stoked that people just drop in here!), a slight description would be cool on some of the lesser known covers, to set the scene up. They don't necessarily have to be the covers of your fave albums, just ones that convey some type of message to you or are simply stand-alone works of art (as are a couple of my honourable mentions). You can click the small cover pics shown here to bring up a page of larger versions for better viewing and a bit of extra info. Enjoy!

Top 5 Album Covers

1. American Beauty Grateful Dead
A classic from Stanley Kelly and Alton Mouse, creators of many famous rock posters and album covers in the 60's, this piece captures beautifully the roots rock Americana feel that the Dead achieved with this album. The way the text was created it can also be read (misread?) as "american reality".
2. Axis: Bold As Love Jimi Hendrix Experience
A psychedelic masterpiece, this vibrant cover features the band surrounded by Hindu imagery. I made a 2 ft. square mounted poster of this cover for my office at one time. It has since passed on.
3. Destroyer KISS
This illustration captures the larger-than-life comic book character fantasy that is KISS. Every kid's rock and roll dream. The wraparound portion of this cover depicts a burning cityscape, as you can see the flames and rubble under KISS' big-ass boots.
4. III Led Zeppelin
A crazy collage of a cover, which i didn't realize until later (since i first owned the cassette) contained a spinning wheel inside the sleeve that rotated different images which could be viewed through holes in the cover.
5. Maggot Brain Funkadelic
At first glance i disliked this cover, but after listening to the album repeatedly, i realized it suits the psychedelic, acid-soaked, funky, soulful, rock grooves to perfection. The title track contains one of the sickest extended guitar solos ever recorded.
Honourable Mention: Sgt. Pepper, Division Bell, Who's Next, Sticky Fingers. View Here.

K, I have to do this really quick. Can't leave huge descriptions!

1. Incubus - Morning View totally fits the album1
2. John Mayer - Room for Squares, very orginal.
3. Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom, I really like the picture of the sun.
4. The Salads - Who's That?, love the old game show theme.
5. Weezer - Blue and Green, album title is the colour of the cover. Easy to remember.

There you have it. All the way from Whistler, BC

oooo i can't believe you didn't but Bitches Brew on there. it certainly beats out American Beauty. probably my favorite album cover ever.

Bold as Love definitely deserves it's spot.

but what about Abbey Road? or Herbie Hancock's Headhunters? also one of my favorites.

ah forget it. there's just too many. :-)
